Villainy - Gig Review: Villainy @ San Fran, Wellington - 20/07/2019

22 Jul 2019 // A review by Lexa.Dixon

The night was Saturday, 20th July and a crowd was lined up ready to enter San Fran for a night of their lives, because none other than New Zealand rock legends, Villainy, were about to set the roof on fire!

Opening with Raised In The Dark, the crowd was full of energy and it was quickly proven that having Raised In The Dark as the first song of the night was a very wise choice! And it didn’t stop there, the crowd were singing right from the start through to the end.

Seeing the enthusiasm from the crowd for a home-grown band like Villainy, sure was a surprise, but at the same time, it was definitely expected. The floor was constantly moving with the crowd dancing in full force.

Each and every member of Villainy performed all their songs with ease. No Future was especially very clear and well-mixed for a non-arena venue, and there were no audible mistakes throughout their entire set.

Not having a lot of room on stage, Villainy utilised it well. They were constantly interacting with the crowd on both sides as well as with each other on stage. Villainy don’t just play guitars, bass, drums etc; Villainy performed to the crowds, and that’s what makes them so iconic and easily memorable.

Overall, in my opinion, San Fran wasn’t the best place for Villainy - they're destined for bigger stages with larger audiences. But in saying that, it was easy to see why this was a sold out event and it's always great when a New Zealand band brings their music to our local venues.
