Young Lyre - EP Review: Providence
Following on from 2015’s popular EP Weekend, Young Lyre have delivered another
gorgeous slice of indie pop rock, reminiscent of Future Islands and Two Door Cinema Club
these Auckland lads have crafted a cohesive catchy sound that hooks you in right from the get-go.
The opening track and single Astore opens with catchy synths and a groovy bass line that propels the chorus along nicely, lyrically an autobiographical account of lead singer Jordan Curtis’s trip to Pakistan, a fantastic opening track with some really sweet vocal harmonies to boot.
The title track Providence is up next, the guitars have more presence in this track, dripping with pop overtones the production on this song is top notch, beautifully arranged and a winner on the dance floor when they play live I’m sure.
The song Honiara is a standout tune on this EP, the perfect amount of moody synths and cascading guitars, mixed with a sweet bass groove and emotional thought provoking lyrics that are delivered with honesty and passion. Popular single Nobody Else is up next, another live favourite I’m sure, major groove factor and another slice of indie pop heaven from this talented band, a fun and upbeat track that hooks you in and gets your foot tapping.
Part ll closes out the EP as an outro for Nobody Else and it works really well as an instrumental too, with a sort of Tycho vibe it’s a great way to close the EP. Overall a very solid effort from these rising stars, if you like your indie rock to be dripping in melodic groove, along with catchy vocal hooks and some fine production then look no further. An excellent release and I look forward to hearing more from Young Lyre.

Experiencing Young Lyre live is like being a... part of an explorative people-prompted flash dance. Their sound has been likened to Two Door Cinema Club's breakout album Tourist History. They sure know how to play their instruments which makes for a quality live show that sounds extremely overseas-ish.
All 5 of Young Lyre's characters are friends from way back when. Simon on the drums is the one with the voluminous hair and an impressive cardio regime, Matt on bass disguises his love for hardcore with a soft luscious beard. Sanjay on Guitar dons the mexi-moustache complimenting his ability to play almost any song he hears. Kiran on the Guitar is the guy who can make any instrument sound like an atmospheric sensation of joy, and Jordan on vocals sports a manly ginger beard to justify the weird vocal noises in an attempt to feel a part of sound check.
