LatinAotearoa - Album Review: Influecis Et Collabis

01 Aug 2018 // A review by Darryl Baser

If there’s one word which sums up LatinAotearoa’s newest offering Influecis Et Collabis, it’s collaboration.

Every cut on this incredible full-length album features guest artists, and it’s a who’s who of the New Zealand jazz, blues and other similar genres.

Right from the first track the Latin grooves are flowing, and bottom-wiggling is automatic.. even for this typically non-dancing middle aged Caucasian.

However, the intricate syncopation on this album from LatinAotearoa is addictive. The collaborations are varied and include contributions from luminaries including Laughton Kora and Nathan Haines.

Skyy Can You Feel Me features Julien Dyne alongside Laughton Kora’s soulful tones, and its interesting hearing Laughton fitting in to Latin timing, instead of his more customary Reggae grooves.

The penultimate track San Montuno features a classic 'Italian House' Piano: heavily syncopated and dancing around the beat like a flamenco dancer.

One Tree Bossa features Nathan Haines and is one of the sweetest tracks on the LP with the recently recovered multi-instrumentalist in fine form. It’s one of the album's highlights.

The closing piece Aquarela featuring Ricky de Medeiros & Ge Luz is a beautiful duet ballad between two voices with an acoustic guitar played in a tender and lilting style.

The album was beautifully recorded at Studio 509 in Auckland, and the mastering on it is simply superb.

About LatinAotearoa

Latinaotearoa is a latin-funk soul & hiphop outfit that has been on the uprise in land of the long white cloud, New Zealand. Their distinct flavor is a brew of three recognizable musical talents in the music scene downunder.

Amazing Vocalist Jeniffer Zea’s from Venezuela, DJ Bobby Brazuka the unofficial Brazilian ambassador of music and culture in New Zealand and Isaac Aesili a talented producer and in-demand New Zealand percussionist and trumpeter. Together they create a unique and truly legitimate Latin act with a local flavour, both bending and blending the traditional music of their homelands with the modern sounds of here and now. Jennifer’s sultry singing layers Bobby’s beat selections beautifully, with Isaac providing the icing with live accompanying percussion.

With vast experience performing in front of local and international audiences, With the musical pedigree, multi-cultural exposure, impressive artist interaction and sheer talent that these artists possess, this trio is sure to shuffle feet and swing hip

17 Mar 2019 // by Darryl Baser
Auckland’s Sam Bartell, who plays under the name Bartells, is a contemporary singer-songwriter with a country streak as wide as the Mississippi. He’s working towards an Australisian tour next year and is dropping new tunes like leaves drop in Autumn.

Rob Joass - Album Review: Pencarrow

Pencarrow is the third album released by musician Rob Joass, who calls the Kapiti Coast home, or Turangawaiwai, if you will. With more than 25 years as a musician under his belt he’s no stranger to writing, playing and recording music to a high standard.

Gig Review: Ciaran McMeeken & Dan Sharp @ 50 Gorillas, Dunedin - 16/02/2019
17 Feb 2019 // by Darryl Baser
As a disclaimer, I knew absolutely nothing about neither Ciaran McMeeken nor Dan Sharp prior to the gig, so I arranged my +1 to be Dunedin songwriter Bronwyn Halley. She’s in the same generational band as Ciaran, and as it turned out, was a very knowledgeable accomplice.

Furniss Brothers - Album Review: Cloudwatcher’s Soul
16 Feb 2019 // by Darryl Baser
The debut album from brothers Matthew & Ben Furniss, is a concept album with a single loosely themed narrative of the kidnapping of the muse 'Cloudwatcher' and the eventual reuniting with the central character. The melody and lyrics manage to tie the theme together quite well.

Little Dove - EP Review Buried in the Backyard
16 Feb 2019 // by Darryl Baser
Not particularly loquacious, and certainly not overly verbose, are probably the best ways to describe the web pages of an Auckland 17-year-old woman who’s recording music as Little Dove. Her Bandcamp page says “This EP is a collection of music made, entirely and messily in my little sleep out, by myself.

Tiny Ruins - Album Review: Olympic Girls
15 Feb 2019 // by Darryl Baser
As a proud owner of the Tiny Ruins mini LP Hurtling Through, which was recorded with Hamish Kilgour (The Clean, The Great Unwashed etc) my anticipation levels for this LP were high. Not quite Johnny Cash eating cake in a bush high, but pretty up there.
