Hybrid Rose - Single Review: Just Press Play

11 May 2018 // A review by Paul Goddard
Hybrid Rose (Rose Muollo-Gray) has done it again. Though this time, she has managed to up the game to another level. Her last collection of songs showed huge potential, but this 4-minute sonic melange of beats twists and attitude taken from the re-release of her debut album is a breath of fresh fire laced air.

Teamwork is often the way to win a game and Fanfickk has been brought on from the side-lines like a last minute super sub. It works so well; the vocals perfectly embody the energy and bile that lies just below the surface. The song hits straight to the heart right from the first drop beat. It walks up with a swagger and attitude laced with creeping menace and then throws the killer punch (chorus) which kind of comes on like K Flay on Ketamine.

This song is trippy, dances along like Keith Flint from The Prodigy and then drops into a hazy catch-your-breath moment before coming out all guns blazing again. I really can't express how good this is. An instant slap to the face that you can't ignore.

About Hybrid Rose

Citing a range of musical influences from Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) to Lady Gaga and Marina Diamandis, to Coldplay, Blenheim resident Rose Gray (aka Hybrid Rose) self-produces tunes that vary from chiptune ditty Video Games to the poppy, dance-y Pixel and distorted dubstep of Expectations.

Her influences go beyond music, however; the opening chords to Pixels came to her while watching an episode of Adventure Time for example. She also cites vintage design and graphics as an influence, especially in terms of the visuals she produces alongside her songs. While Gray doesn’t consider herself a political person, she says she’s very passionate about making change.

Her musical character is a little more involved however, and the music is occasionally politically inspired. Hybrid Rose, an electronic character. An infectious virus in your ears, an addiction you cannot quit.

Sam Cullen - EP Review: Love Again
18 Apr 2024 // by Paul Goddard
When I first heard this brand-new EP from Invercargill native Sam Cullen, I was immediately reminded of another famous Sam who has an equally famous last name (Fender). The four songs on the Love Again EP  have a familiarity and similarity with roots going back to Springsteen and the well-trodden stadium rock road but there is also something in the songs on Love Again that could only be grown in New Zealand.

Marrow Neck - EP Review: Made Up

Sitting here in a very wet and cold, rainy UK watching the oldies falling out of the local Wetherspoons where they have been on the piss since 9am (yep the UK is weird it's only the old people who can afford to get pissed all day).I am reflecting on the past as I listen to the latest EP Made Up from Auckland-based Mark Hannington.
