Nation - Single Review: Summer

Nation's new track, Summer, instantly hits you with some high notes and some sultry lows on the vocals, reminiscent of Laughton Kora's style, led by some jazzy funky bass and a very Jamiroquai-esque hook in the chorus. With a very basic chorus lyrically (easy to remember which makes it likely to quickly become a crowdpleaser at live shows). The guitar presence is reasonably minimal in the track compared with the other instruments, but there are some nice subtle intricate fills here and there.
The short EDM breakdown was unexpected, but it fits in well with the quiet synth that backs the entire track up to that point. An interesting track as the Summer title would generally make me think of sunshine, beaches, and road trips, however, the level of bass and the drop in the breakdown gives it a "heavy" feel energy-wise, which makes it seem more of a night time club hit, than a lighthearted airy Summer hit.
A great, compact, energetic track, that must have been arranged with Summer festivals in mind.

A decidedly reserved Tuesday night in Auckland and people were quietly piling into the Powerstation and grabbing some drinks at the bar. The upper balcony area was closed, so the fans were amassing downstairs around the inner perimeter of the venue.

The latest release from Wellington trio Mermaidens is a straight up middle finger to the powers that control the world and throws away the mainstream formula of verse/chorus patterns, instead, forming a self-righteous maelstrom of sonic environments. With no warning given, You Maintain The Stain gets straight into cold, apathetic vocals alongside a pluggy bassline, until the guitar jumps in with an uncomfortable level of discord that sows the seeds of uneasiness in the pit of your stomach as if every instrument is performing a different song.
