Festival Review: Bay Dreams 2017

10 Jan 2017 // A review by Freecell

Bay Dreams from start to finish was one tight gig. From the security, to the food staff, AWOP, bars and musicians down to the audience. There was some good vibes throughout the day in beautiful Mount Maunganui. It actually reminded me of the Big Day Out gigs, being at an arena and having multiple stages through out the venue. (4 stages in total)

The first thing we did was to take photos of all the stages, we got there early and got some good coverage of the venue. The first and busiest act of the day at Bay Dreams was the Sunshine Sound System. They hosted the Bay Dreams event from the main stage throughout the day, and played music between acts. One of the first acts on the Nightmare (red) Stage was The Booty Brothers, they played an awesome set of quality trap, moombah and electronic dance music. After witnessing the lighting and sound system at this stage I instantly knew that I would spend most of my day at this stage.

Mitch James was the next artist down on the main stage. A young musician once a busker who got given the opportunity of a lifetime! A very good singer and guitarist, very talented. Spectrum was the first act on the V Energy Lighthouse (green) Stage, followed by Herman Saiz spinning house and electro music. This stage was a lighthouse DJ booth in the centre of the room it had quality lights, projector and sound system. Right next door to the Lighthouse Stage was The Castaway (purple) Stage, this area was big, and its sound system was huge, and there was a big purple octopus stage set, it was impressive! The first act on this stage was Troy Kete followed by an Indie rock band called Dead Recipe - their stage presence was awesome interacting with the crowd was a great set!

Quix played an awesome set on the nightmare stage with quality trap and electronic dance music his mixing and song selection was powerful. Its no wonder as Quix has recently joined Diplo's record label Mad Decent! The crowd was huge.

At 2.25pm Katchafire holding down the main stage with quality reggae. Tom Francis wowed the crowd with his Hip-Hop and trap style beats with real drum kit, DJ and MCs, the projections on this stage were impressive. Collude DJ's dropped the Deephouse at the Lighthouse Stage and with a crowd of Banana costumes and sailor hats it was hard not to smile.

Time x Two on the Castaway Stage was a quality DJ and MC act with a big dance floor of people getting down and dirty.

At 3.20pm Homebrew was going off on the main stage with huge crowd and good vibes!

The crowd was massive for P-Money on the Nightmare Stage with pure Hip-Hop and electronic music. At the Castaway Stage the Goldmember band was quality with brilliant guitars and midi keys and the singer was holding down the dance floor, the crowd was all good vibes and dancing. And finally with most genres of sound being covered at

Bay Dreams at 3.45pm Concord Dawn and Trei dropped some drum n bass at the Nightmare Stage, the crowd packed out and soon after MC Tiki Taane came on stage and played Don't Tell Me from Uprising.. was a tight set then Trei dropped his sick beats an awesome collaboration for quality drum n bass. Kora then hit the main stage and it was even thicker than before the crowd is huge! State of Mind was up next on the Nightmare Stage - they were definitely one of my favourites, SOM is a great live act, The MC even swapped hats with a member of the audience for a few songs. And I witnessed the strangest thing! A whole lot of people in the crowd had joined together like a caterpillar and was rowing a boat!!? I should have taken a photo. Evidence that this place was going off!

Kilter at the Castaway Stage had a huge crowd. And the Chores set was epic with huge crowd at the Lighthouse Stage.

AC Slater had the place humming with his house and techno rave music, his selection was class! Was funny to see the Dnb crowd leave and the house crowd pack out the Nightmare Stage.

Even though it was slightly raining the crowd outside on the main stage was packed for Yelawolf. But my favourite act was Krafty Kuts with his magic mixing through any genre and massive breakbeats, After running to all the other events all day and writing reviews and taking photos all over the place I finally sat down and just enjoyed Krafty's set from start to finish. Easily the best DJ at the whole entire event, well.. until Grandmaster Flash came on to the stage the crowd was even bigger after Krafty Kuts set on the Castaway Stage. He started by playing some new music and then he takes it back to the 70's and that's when the crowd lost the plot! A great entertainer.

I did sneak back to Nightmare Stage for Skism b2b Must Die and wowsers! There was some serious heat in the room. It was like the crowd had been waiting all day, it was absolutely bonkers!!

Eats Everything and Kolsch finished up the Lighthouse Stage as it finally got dark. Peking Duk and Shapeshifter finished up the main stage with a huge crowd. Tha Trickaz finished up on the Nightmare Stage and Grandmaster Flash ended the night at the Castaway Stage.

Overall the location, transport, food and beverage was great. The line-up was absolutely top notch even though Bizzy Bone got stuck at the airport. Three 6 Mafia was just as great if not better on the main stage. The Lighthouse Stage needed to be darker as it was too bright, and the AWOP refund took ages. But probably the best overall aspect of Bay Dreams was the great vibes and positive outlook of the crowd and audience. A great friendly vibe from everyone!
