Makeshift Parachutes - EP Review: Mr Happy

03 Nov 2016 // A review by Momoko.B

It was a stressful week in the life of a student, studying for exams, earning enough to stay anchored in the big smoke. When Sunday rolled around and the time came to finally relax, some dream-like tones were needed to smile, sit back, and relax.

So it’s no wonder I turned to the sweet sounds of the latest Makeshift Parachutes EP to move me blissfully into a dream state.

Creeping slowly into New Zealand’s up and coming Indie music scene, Auckland-based – but originally from Austin, Texas, four-piece band Makeshift Parachutes has managed to seamlessly slide their tunes into our heads once again.

Influenced by the likes of The Doors and Tame Impala, Mr Happy comes as an psychedelic thunderstorm, with plenty of guitar and vocal effects in play that ties the sounds perfectly for listening to day and night. Every track is well worth taking a thorough listening through - Honeybee turns their lighter sound into heavier metal, and then throws it back to the dream state with echoey slide guitar solidified by a wicked bassline. And then we move forward to the slower and more ethereal sound of Golden Weak, which made me feel like i was being flown into the clouds.

As well as it being a worthwhile EP to listen to - The EP art is freakin’ awesome as well, a 5 out of 5 for the whole package!

And don’t think they’re going to evaporate off the scene after sitting in satisfaction over such a good EP, - if you want to see more of them, you can catch the at the Seuss New Year’s Eve Festival this year.

About Makeshift Parachutes

The first jam session took place in a wine cellar in Austin Texas sometime in 2012, but Makeshift Parachutes wasn't officially a band until early 2013. ?
Due to beautiful unforeseen circumstances Makeshift Parachutes is now based out of Auckland.

Makeshift Parachutes' music is a psychedelicate thunderstorm encompassing powerful rhythms and soft melodies intertwining strong bass riffs with lush guitar, slide, a touch of synth, and spacey vocals.

Albi & The Wolves - Album Review: One Eye Open
06 Dec 2016 // by Momoko.B
In bustling cities and the ever-changing world of westernization and gentrification, we often find ourselves too caught up in time, unable to appreciate the more peaceful moments in life. Well, it just so happened that it was luckily a sunny day on Auckland's west coast, when I decided to listen to an album that seemed to slow down time itself and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the nature around me.

Album Review: Thomas Brothers

New Zealand has been legendary for having sibling-based bands, with the likes of prolific musicians The Finn Brothers way back and more recently The Nielson Brothers. And as 2016 comes to a close, it seems like a new set of brothers is taking New Zealand’s Indie-Pop scene by storm: The Thomas Brothers.
