Villainy - Gig Review: Villainy @ Galatos, Auckland - 16/04/2016

29 Apr 2016 // A review by Kerry MB

Galatos is an almost hidden secret venue when you consider its location, but I was pleasantly surprised with its vast interior once inside. With great acoustics, it was a great spot to be catching Villainy as part of their Dead Sight tour around the country, along with City of Souls and Decades.

Villainy have been making a hell of a name for themselves in the past year and then some. This was my third time seeing the guys live and they surely didn’t disappoint.

First up for the night were Christchurch band, Decades. They hit the stage and quickly gathered pretty much all the crowd in their highly infectious Rock Pop sensibilities that is a satisfying mix of being aggressive yet delicate. With a distinct, sometimes quirky sound, they were a great element to kick the night off. Next up were Auckland six piece, City Of Souls, creating quite the rumble just about everywhere with their layered heavy rock reminiscing elements of bands that all current members were once a part of (Blindspott, Cold By Winter, Blacklistt etc.)

With City Of Souls finished rallying the crowds, it was time for Villainy to take the stage and assault us all with their presence and good ole Hard Rock.

See, Villainy are a band who know what they have and use it well. They make great music and play it well. Extremely tight and unflappable, they are a band I have noticed go from strength to strength over the years and take it all in their stride, humbling and courteous. They played a strong set from their Dead Sight album and watching the crowd go more than a little crazy was a memorable highlight too. Great night, great music, great crowds.

Villainy has their seat firmly set in NZ Rock for many years to come.

Pale Flag - EP Review: Imperium
29 Jan 2024 // by Kerry MB
With a lot of misconceptions about deathcore, it’d be easy to lump Pale Flag into “one of those bands” based on the sub-genre alone. Luckily, I love metal in the most extreme and Pale Flag just so happen to create deathcore of the finest, which makes it even better to enjoy.

Broke are a five-piece from Taranaki who love to jam and make great music together. What started out originally as a solo project by Hamish McDonald (lead guitar and vocals) and resulted in a self-written, recorded and produced debut album Momento Mori in 2021, eventually paved the way for the lads to make it official and start creating new music together.
