Bass & Bassinets is the second album released by the self-described ‘sunshine reggae’ band, Tomorrow People. A collection of mid-tempo reggae centric tunes this album is full of strong vocals, soothing harmonies, catchy tunes, ragga rap and feels good rhythms to get ya groove on. This album is perfect to be playing while having that good ol’ Kiwi BBQ in the sun or chilling by the pool side.
One of the highlights of this album is Get It Back, an emotional, soulful song with beautiful harmonies. The vocals carry the song perfectly and you couldn’t get a better female voice in this genre of music. Hamo has power and her runs are on point. High fives to you chicka!
Again & Again was a song I found myself boogieing around the house to, much to the amusement of my flatmates. The chorus of this song is infectious and the trumpets just add that extra uplifting quality. This song deserves to only be played loud and proud accompanied by enthusiastic dancing.
Lastly was No Rush, and bonus… There’s a remix of it! Filled with great reggae chords, harmonies, raga raps and let’s not forget those steel drums. I felt like I was on a beach in Jamaica! Also Kenape’s range in this song is amazing, such a beautiful sounding voice that effortlessly goes into falsetto. The Papa Pablo remix adds that gritty dance beat that amplifies an already brilliant song.
Tomorrow People have proven with this album why they are one of New Zealand’s biggest successes when it comes to Reggae bands. From playing in the garage to now playing at New Zealand’s Reggae Festival ‘Raggamuffin’, and with a solid fan base over the country, these guys are going up, up, up!
About Tomorrow People
A studio project turned live stage show, the 7-piece band are purveyors of what they describe as ‘sunshine reggae’. Focused on providing a mid-tempo sound that, while clearly reggae-centric, adds touches of dancehall ragga to its colour. It is a sound built around strong vocals, soothing harmonies, catchy hooks, aggressive ragga raps, and feel good riddims (rhythms).
Together, the members of mixed descent (NZ/Maori/Pacific Island) have decades of experience in the music industry, citing previous careers in hip-hop, R&B, gospel, funk and soul. Taking their name from a Ziggy Marley song, Tomorrow People live up to the futuristic allusions it casts, having built their fan base via social media (www.facebook.com/tomorrow.ppl) and demo tracks uploaded to YouTube. While they gather their musical influences from Jamaican and Hawaiian artists alike, once combined with their roots in NZ music, they bring a sound that is clean, laid-back and easy on the eardrums.
