The Pacific Music Awards 2015

21 Jun 2015 // A review by jck2

The 2015 Vodafone Pacific Music Awards was held at the Vodafone Events Centre on Saturday the 13th of June. The event was a well produced and slick celebration of Pacific Music. The theme for the night was navigating the future. The presenter for the night arrived from the future in the Delorean. The Giant screen featured a story about comedians Nate Tha Feelstyle, Jandals, The Kidd and Azza time travelling in a hilarious set of skits that accompanied the awards.

The awards celebrated Pacific artists and their music, with 15 awards presented on the night - including a Special Recognition award for Sol3 Mio, and the Manukau Insititute of Technology award for Herbs, celebrating their first two albums What Be Happen and Light of the Pacific - with the tribute performance by Three Houses Down getting the crowd up on their feet.

The performers on the night were outstanding – showcasing the talent we have in Pacific music. The awards ceremony was opened in true Pacific style by Anuanua Dance Troupe. For the first time every performance was by a finalist - starting off with Team Dynamite, followed by Sid Diamond, Maryanne Ito, Andrew Faleatua, TJ Taotua, Erakah and K.One. Every performance was amazing and showcased the depth of talent and diversity in Pacific music. The evening was closed perfectly, by the big winners of the night, South Auckland's own Cydel.

For me the act that really caught my attention was Sid Diamond's performance of his song King or Queen featuring Mikey Mayz. The lyrics were heartfelt and touching and the beautiful voice of Mikey Mayz and The accompaniment of Piano and Bass and a superb sound system really made this song the highlight of the night.
