Nick Ferretti - Never Leave Your Lover Alone Album Review

20 Jul 2014 // A review by Kerry MB
The name may not be familiar to some, but his voice will be. Listening to Nick Ferretti, you stop, whatever it is you’re doing and just listen. This is exactly why he manages to capture the attention of nearly everyone on Queen Street, Auckland, where you’ll find him most weekends, rain or sun. Nick is a really humble guy, and for this young father of one, that humbleness reflects in his music and nature.

When I first discovered Nick playing on Queen Street a few months back, my first thoughts were, I really hope he has an EP or demo, because there was something really special about what I heard that day. Lucky, for me, he was selling copies of his first collection of songs, and so here it is. Never Leave Your Lover Alone is a powerful collection of what Nick does best, him and his guitar and beautiful melody of blues. In some ways, it’s really hard to tell you how heartfelt and honest all of his songs are, because telling you just doesn’t do them justice, you have to let you ears take the lead. Nick sings in such a way that if you don’t start to feel something in the first minute, there may be something wrong with you.

One of my absolute favourite tracks has to be track seven, Help Myself To You and Owe My Bones To The Ground These numbers are soulful and sultry, easily pulling at your heartstrings as Nick serenades the listener with such honest humility. There will almost be a tear because that is how beautiful they are. Further down the tracks is a great number - I Need A Secret, and the awesome organ laced, Opportunity which really shows off Nick’s melodic rock style, with perfectly suited backing vocals.

I honestly can say that this has been the most played CD of any artist I have reviewed, my words don’t even begin to touch the sides of how poetically amazing it is, and I know there will be much more awesome things to follow from Nick, so watch this space. About Nick Ferretti

I was born in the sunny seaside town of Nelson, New Zealand. The home or Pics peanut butter, Tui balm and me! I grew up immersed in music thanks to my rock and roll Mum and Dad. From the womb I was rocking out, thanks to them, to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Mink Deville, John Hiatt and The Stones. My Dad bought me my first guitar, a half sized classical nylon string when I was 10 years old. I held it up, stared cross eyed at the fret board and said 'what the hell am I going to do with this?!!!' I started busking in the streets when I was 12, after a few lessons but mainly self taught and from there on I knew that there was nothing else I wanted to do with my life, but music.

Since then I have grown up playing the streets, travelling a little, playing gigs, weddings, functions. I was at University in Christchurch later on and formed a band called 'The Weight' named after the great song by The Band. With Danny Sugar on the bass and Dave Jiminez on the drums. We gigged for a while and recorded a few tracks and to this day they are still family to me and our musical chemistry is undeniable. I also met my future wife, Tanya aka to American Indian folk as (Padfoot)

I traveled onto Melbourne for a few years after the Christchurch earthquake and it was there that I really started to take my songwriting to a new level. I was busking the nights and sleeping the days, in a bit of a haze but during this time met some inspiring characters and escaped from a few tricky situations! I also spent some time in Tonga for some Island inspiration for an album I was writing at the time. Since then I have returned all limbs intact, reunited with the love of my life and we have a beautiful little 11 month old boy, Solomon. Who already can do a decent drum roll and attack a few killer chords! We traveled New Zealand with my music, busking, gigs and a radio show in 'Bang Bang' our washed out lime green '58 Bedford house bus and landed in Auckland where I recorded my latest album 'Back to the Dust' at Roundhead Studio's. I had the privilege of working with Danny Sugar and Dave Jiminez again. I will be touring Europe in a month's time and look forward to the path ahead.

Pale Flag - EP Review: Imperium
29 Jan 2024 // by Kerry MB
With a lot of misconceptions about deathcore, it’d be easy to lump Pale Flag into “one of those bands” based on the sub-genre alone. Luckily, I love metal in the most extreme and Pale Flag just so happen to create deathcore of the finest, which makes it even better to enjoy.
