Eli Driftwood - Lies Your Momma Told Me Album Review

02 Apr 2014 // A review by Peter-James Dries

Call you need is an email and vote for “Eli Driftwood” please please! Help me Help him!! It’s his turn to shine!!!! Let’s do it! -@PeacePunkPrince

A lonely cry in the wilderness of Twitter. A name drowning in a sea of names, all struggling to be heard, to make it into the big time, with their names in shining lights. Of all those names being thrown about Eli Driftwood and the music penned to his name, which you can find on his recently released Lies Your Momma Told Me, deserves to be heard.

Without a label his mode of transmission is word of mouth, a hope and a prayer. Sadly there isn’t much money in that, not Lorde kinda money at least. Unlike other bands he isn’t after the money, but with inflation cigarettes and Scrumpy don’t come free. I can relate, and I empathise, so here’s me doing my bit.

If you’re reading this, check Eli Driftwood out. He’s not some new name on the scene, you just ain’t heard of him. There’s been traces of him, under the name Elliot Brown for the past 6 year at least. The there was his stint in the Stomps. This ain’t no spring chicken, he knows what he’s doing and he does it good.

Lies Your Momma Told Me is a modern interpretation of country unique to the mind of the man behind the guitar. If you liked pre-fame Kings of Leon, back before they were on radio station, then you’re definitely going to enjoy this album. It’s that same Americana vibe, mixed with that kiwi twang you find in performances at the Tapawera Country Music Hoe-Down.

Those with misconceptions and prejudices against country are quick to forget their roots. Don’t pass of this album because of it’s genre. It’s as catchy as hell, and as good as anything else you’re watching and listening to over corporate broadcast.  Only difference is Eli Driftwood doesn’t have the money machine pulling your strings with marketing.

After such a long career in music, he started at 6, you can be sure Lies Your Momma Told Me is not a swan song for the soon to be ex-pat Eli Driftwood. I have no doubt Fort Worth, country music’s motherland, will be receptive to this modern twist on the genre, and a source of inspiration for the man behind the pseudonym.

And if being number one on the 95bFM charts last week doesn’t open people’s ears to the music of Eli Driftwood, then this excursion is sure to. As written by the artist back in 2010 “New Zealanders, as a general rule, don't like other New Zealanders unless they have made it in the US or the UK first.” Be it pessimism or realism, when you next hear from him be sure to remember he told you so.

Eli Driftwood’s Lies Your Momma Told Me is available for free on Bandcamp (http://elidriftwood.bandcamp.com/album/lies-your-momma-told-me), but I implore you to at least slip him a couple of bucks. You have piece of mind that you’re not funding some corporate big wig in an office, you’re paying a man working the street to bring you more music.

Yurt Party - Album Review: Yurt Party
07 Sep 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
It sure isn't summer, and this is really not the Balkans, but Yurt Party’s new self-titled album refutes that. Back with another one of them Balkan rocking beats, Yurt Party’s debut is jazzy, erratic, and full of zest and energetic grooves, with flavour notes of ska, dub, and bergamot.

The New Existentialists - Single Review: Invocation
16 Jul 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
The New Existentialists, a doom metal band known for their dark and atmospheric soundscapes, have just… Wait a minute… No. The New Existentialists are really not a doom metal band, and they’re really not known for their dark soundscapes… They’re more known as stalwarts of a bygone era.

Samuel Philip Cooper - Album Review: Journey to Sobriety
01 Jun 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
Samuel Philip Cooper sits on the brink of social media stardom, with videos of his belting out pop music piano covers from behind a pair of thick spectacles racking up views and likes on Insta. Little do any of the mindless doom scrollers swiping through his reels know, but percolating behind his eye brows is the very key to their very salvation.
