The Broken Heartbreakers - Cheese on Toast Review

06 Nov 2007 // A review by Rachelbhb
THE BROKEN HEARTBREAKERS - self-titled (independent)
After hearing the opening bar of opening tune "Pretty Thing", I've created a kicking machine that I will gladly program to kick my sorry shins for having neglected this band until now. This unmistakably homegrown folk-pop sound is what I'm sure has been lacking in our scene, and the Broken Heartbreakers have been quietly working up a steady following for the past five years. This record should (if justice is served) establish them in their rightful place. The shared lead vocals of John Guy Howell and Rachel Bailey work together to quietly rival any international voice I've heard, evoking the hushed psychedelic beauty of early Mojave 3 while sounding like some great lost Kiwi folk record. Wonderful.

About The Broken Heartbreakers

The Broken Heartbreakers are a 'folk-pop' group. They started life in 2002 when song-writer John Guy Howell teamed up with singer Rachel Bailey, and the nucleus of the group was formed. To their surprise, the band’s repertoire of songs of “love, loss and lonesome nights” soon garnered a loyal following beyond the usual friends and family circuit.

As their popularity has grown, the group has been chuffed to play at the bass player’s brother’s wedding and to support such international acts as Lou Barlow and The Handsome Family.

Their recently released, self-titled album is a labour of love. In its making, The Broken Heartbreakers boldly chose to turn up their collective noses at today’s digital recording methods. As a result, their album was produced using only vintage analogue technology and was recorded and mixed to tape in “real time”. Real performances by real people. No digital effects were used in the making of this record. Plate reverbs, echo chambers and butt-burning valve amplifiers informed and enriched every loving detail.
