Brutally Frank - The Finer Details

15 Apr 2007 // A review by johnsoncraigsbc
When a band becomes sponsored by sunglasses and clothing labels, what would you expect?

These guys are pretty tight when it comes to musicianship, but some of their song writing is a bit high school. The blunt style of the lyrics could be the downfall of this set of catchy, but not very intellectually challenging songs.

It is with good reason Brutally Frank have been on The Rock’s 'Off The Record', and I’m sure many classic rock fans will adopt Brutally Frank as their new favourite band, but I can’t help wondering how long it will be until their songs are used merely for children’s cartoons theme songs or horror movie credits.

Don’t get me wrong though, Brutally Frank are certainly owning their element, and I’d expect to see more of these guys performing alongside the likes of Supernova or Van Halen (minus the solos).

On that note, it would’ve been great to hear the guitarist let loose every now and then. When opening the record you expect to hear some good old grungy solos, but there is none of that, which was a bit disappointing. Apart from that the singer can sing, well. Keep doing what your doing guys, because I'm sure there is that niche market out there for you.

So if you are into rock, then get Brutally Frank's new album 'The Finer Details'. It is full of rock goodness.

About Brutally Frank

Brutally Frank are an Auckland based rock band, who have been extremely prolific on the live scene over the last two years. With an eclectic style that blends traditional rock flavours with a modern alternative attitude the band offers a tight, energetic and passionate stage show. Jeremy delivers the message with intensity and showmanship, backed by a wall of distorted guitar melodies and Azza beating the crap out of his bass!

The bands name reflects the attitude of the songwriting, with content that is generally based on true life experience – and definitely pulling no punches!

The group have left no stone unturned on the Auckland circuit, having played at just about every available venue, with bands such as Head Like a Hole, Tadpole, Autozamm, The Tea Party (Canada), Fur Patrol and Revolver.

Recloose- Perfect Timing
14 Apr 2008 // by johnsoncraigsbc
Recloose has been busy and after such previous success, the now internationally exalted producer and DJ has brought a new touch to living room and club dance with ‘Perfect Timing’, taking a few pages out of the eighties in the process. Starting the album with Rachel Frasier and the mellow sophistication of ‘Catch A Leaf’ is the perfect way to precede the dismal post eighties revival that is ‘Robop’.

We all want to be just like you- Crash Test For Favourite Things The general aesthetic of Crash Test for Favourite Things has matured since their debut, self titled album, and the cover art captures some of the imagery that is apparent in the music wonderfully. It speaks innocence and injustice.

The Phoenix Foundation - Happy Ending

After such success from ‘Pegasus’ it was exciting to hear what direction The Phoenix Foundation had taken with their new album- 'Happy Ending'. I like the album and its casual holiday appeal, with up beat happy tunes like ‘Bright Grey’ and ‘Bleaching Sun’, but opening singles aside; the album showcases all of the song writing talent that is The Phoenix Foundation.
