Luke Buda - Luke Buda 4-8-2006

Being a big fan of The Phoenix Foundation, I had high expectations for Luke Buda's solo performance at the San Francisco Bathhouse last night. When Luke finally came on sporting a pompous jacket with tails and all, I knew I wasn’t about to be let down.
I was a Luke Buda virgin until last night, and it was a night to remember. Luke, as usual, was in fine form. His music had similarities to The Phoenix Foundation, but wasn’t a complete replication, and I enjoyed a slight heavier position than that of his original band. Along with his guitar playing skills, Luke's voice was of a high quality, and seemed to get better and better as the night progressed. Along with his musical performance, Buda always puts on a funny, interactive show, and quite often shouts out remarks, much to the audiences amusement.
Luke Buda was also accompanied by an outstanding band, which included an amazing keyboard player. The second song into the set provided us with the keyboard solo of the evening, a very intense and powerful instrumental segment which blew the crowd away.
Another highlight of the show was a guest appearance from co Phoenix Foundation front man - Samuel Flynn Scott, who assisted with vocals and tambourine in a particularly harmonious song.
As the night drew closer to an end, Buda and the band seemed to be only warming up. A powerful cover of ‘Purple Rain’ was absolutely amazing! An extended end and a long vocal build up turned up the heat as the chorus was repeated again and again, much to the audiences’ appreciation, and evidently Buda's pleasure.
With a short off time period they proceeded to play an encore, and it was my personal favourite of the night. The guitar solo at the end stages of the song is what did it for me. Some of the effects used were incredibly effective, and the vocal effects were somewhat- intense.
Luke Buda had comprehensively lived up to my expectations, and more. His shows are always entertaining through his evident sense of humour, and I can’t wait for his next gig.

About Luke Buda
In 2016 Buda co-wrote and produced Sir Dave Dobbyn's Harmony House, and in 2017 he released an album as one quarter of the band Teeth (an outfit featuring David Long of The Mutton Birds). Since 2007 he has composed music for television and film as Moniker. Their work can be found in seminal Aotearoa films such as Eagle vs. Shark, Hunt For The Wilderpeople, and Boy, the latter winning them Best Original Score at the NZ Film and TV Awards. In 2018 the group took home the APRA Best Original Music in a Series for Cleverman.
In between all of this Buda has released two solo albums, Special Surprise (2005, Arch HIll) and Vesuvius (2008, Arch Hill).

After such success from ‘Pegasus’ it was exciting to hear what direction The Phoenix Foundation had taken with their new album- 'Happy Ending'. I like the album and its casual holiday appeal, with up beat happy tunes like ‘Bright Grey’ and ‘Bleaching Sun’, but opening singles aside; the album showcases all of the song writing talent that is The Phoenix Foundation.
