5star Fallout - 5star Fallout - Awapuni Tavern, Palmerston North - 26 May

30 May 2006 // A review by Shade
Led by ex-NZ Idol runner-up Michael Murphy, I expected 5star Fallout to come up with recycled pop-rock covers but they definitely proved me wrong. Prior to the gig, Quarter 2 had nothing but good things to say about this band and I have to say that I agree with everything they said. 5star Fallout's harmonies were perfect, their songs were well rehearsed and they worked well as a team.

It was obvious that Michael has learnt a lot from his NZ Idol experience and he has probably taught the other band members a thing or two, but when watching 5star Fallout perform everything to do with NZ Idol was soon forgotten and I now have nothing but respect for them. They have an amazing stage presence and really know how to work the crowd. The lyrics teamed up perfectly with the music and their talent was almost overwhelming.

Their songs are worthy of hitting the top 10 charts and that is not because of the instant popularity that Michael has given the band - that is because they are actually good, really really good. If not already, this is one band that will inspire others - a band that other bands will list as an influence on their biography.

5star Fallout made good use of the stage, have put a lot of thought into all of their songs and have the support of a great manager. They are destined to go far and will exceed all expectations the music industry may have for them. I definitely was not disappointed and I know that if you should ever see them live you will not be disappointed either.

The best part about the performance was seeing how much passion 5star Fallout have for their music. Not only are they passionate about their music but they are also passionate about how they present their music on stage. They are not afraid to interact with the crowd and to get everyone motivated and they left me with a great first impression of the band. It was also great to see 5star Fallout and members from Quarter 2 sing some songs together.

Favourite Song: The song this tour was named after - Seasons.

About 5star Fallout

One band culminating in one amazing act of love and lust, the climax of which is a spectacle not to be missed. Much like two trains on a collision course, 5star Fallout has been the result of two forces coming together and instead of ending in destruction, has grown into what will prove to be a great New Zealand rock act.

With thoughtfully arranged guitar riffs, dynamic vocal harmonies, and a raw energy and sound, 5star Fallout aims to write songs that everyone can draw meaning from and relate to.

The five members of 5star Fallout have come from different areas of the country and have different musical backgrounds. Four of our members, John McCaffrey, Peter Williams, Andrew Kerr and Michael Murphy have all been high school friends from Taupo and have been in various bands. Adam Stevenson hails from Greytown and has also been involved in bands throughout school.

Maggie Cocco's Science for Sociopaths - Gig Review: Maggie Cocco @ Lopdell Theatre, Tititrangi - 22/11/2023
27 Nov 2023 // by Shade
Whatever came out of the pandemic, it stranded some amazing talent here long enough for them to enrich our musical world. Down into the Lopdell labyrinth, a buzz of age-spanning expectancy waited for two of these: Maggie Cocco and her accompanist for the tour Bonnie Schwarz who would add much more than just ‘sad cello’ to tonight’s epic cycle of piano songs.

Eve Kelly @ Jam Factory, Tauranga - 03/03/2023

The ‘Sold Out’ sign is a good sign and it went up several days before Eve Kelly’s first show at The Jam Factory in Tauranga’s Historic Village. Whakatane-based Eve Kelly is a star on-the-rise and she put on a show that left her audience, old and new, elated and begging for more.

Coridian - Single Review: Seed II

There's an implicit line in Rock music between the head-banging craze that makes you want to raid the mosh pit, and the refined preciseness of a subtle yet powerful tune. Very few bands can master both.
