Idol mania has started

Tonight brings the first of many elimination shows and we only know it will be a matter of time before our malls and other public places will be filled with screaming fans!

If you're a fan of the show, be sure to check out the official NZ Idol website. You'll find all of the usual stuff there, but one extra cool feature this year is all of the extra video content that will be available this year. You can now view the performances of each contestant, incase you missed the show.

If Idol isn't really your thing, but you like the idea of televised talent quests anyway, you might want to check out Rock Star: INXS. The show kicks off on Thursday at 9.30pm on TV3.

Sullen Moon

Which NZ artist/band do you think will be a huge international success one day?

I'd like to see Percy Feral and Cherry's Gemstones get big. They're two of the best bands around at the moment. From NZ or anywhere.

Who would you most like to tour with?

Probably Rachel Stamp, or Relaxed Muscle.

What is your most embarrassing concert moment?

When we had a dancer, his 'nads fell out of his g-string.

What are you planning on doing during 2005?

We've got our new EP, PEP, coming out in June. We'll probably spend the rest of the year getting back into the swing of things; it's been over a year since we played with any regularity.  So yeah, probably just work on becoming a really tight unit, on and off stage, and get people interested before we start working on an album.

How did you come up with the name Sullen Moon?

Kashmir came up with it, and no it has nothing to do with They Might Be Giants or the book by Nancy Willard. It was one of a number of random phrases that we went through. Other possibilities were We Are Not Popzirkus and Hey, Did You See That Trans... I guess common sense got the better of us.

What is in your CD collection at home?

All sorts. From Add N To (X) to Zwan. We all have quite diverse tastes, so to describe our combined collections you could probably use the word "everything".

I know that's not a good answer, but we really do listen to so much different stuff it's hard to just pick out a few things.

What advice would you give other budding musicians/bands?

Make sure you know what you're doing when you ask someone to join your band, and if you find someone who's perfect don't let them go.

Bruce Paine

Which NZ artist/band do you think will be a huge international success one day?

There are so many talented artists in this country it is extremely difficult to say.  I wish everyone a fair and equal chance of success!

Who would you most like to tour with?

I would enjoy working with talented musicians from such rich ethnic backgrounds as Spain, Portugal and South America.

What is your most embarrassing concert moment?

Fortunately there haven't been any really embarrassing moments but there have been some awkward ones.  Once, enthusiastic fans showered me with pink carnations when I played the first item of my concert.  Another time at an outdoor concert, a cat circled my stool a few times before climbing a trellis behind me.  I was afraid of being pounced on from above!

What are you planning on doing during 2005?

In 2005 I plan to promote my new CD "Guitar @ Museum" in New Zealand and overseas.  In early July I have a concert with the Hampshire Area Guitar Orchestra (winners of the 2003 Guitar Orchestra Competition of Great Britain) and in late September I will be touring the South Island with the Auckland Choral Society on their 150th anniversary.  While in Europe this August I will visit France and Spain as a tourist!

What is in your CD collection at home?

It's varied but here's a small sample;
Akbar Khan Indian Sitar,
Michel Camilo and Tomatito (Flamenco guitar and jazz piano),
"The Melancholy Roar Niagara" by Stepan Rak
Portuguese Fado sung by Misia,
Nigel Kennedy and the Kroke Band,
The Ukele Orchestra of Great Britain "The Meaning of Life",
The Prague Guitar Quartet,
Split Enz,
Cat Stevens

What advice would you give other budding musicians/bands?

Work well, be open to other musicians and ideas, communicate, be grateful for and take every opportunity offered no matter how trivial it may seem, and most of all enjoy what you do and be sure that audiences do too!
