Hype - Hype Interview

21 May 2005 // An interview by Shade
1. Who would you most like to support live?

The White Stripes AND The Vines.

2. How would you describe your music?

Blues on Fire with a twist of Psychedelia. I think that's a pretty fair kind of description. I am influenced by Blues music, but there is a lot of Pumpkin-esque layers of sound packed in.

3. Where do you see yourselves in five years?

Touring the third album, recording the tour for DVD and preparing for an outtakes and bside album. Maybe collaborating with other artists.

4. What advice would you like to give other budding musicians?

Well I am still budding myself, but so far I have learned 3 big things. First one, stay off drugs it will only make is worse, be true to yourself and don't let anyone try to change you and also act as professional as possible.

5. What is the best part of playing in front of a live audience?

Watching the sweat drip of the crowds face as they sway gentley in the warm mist to the story book of poetic lyrics in the ballads.

6. What is the best live gig you have ever been to?

The White Stripes live in Wellington. I went with my dad in 2003. Unbelievably mind blowing. Rem came close but it was a bit surreal. At the stripes I really felt I connected with the band and it was more real.

7. Which member of Hype has the worst habit and what is it?

I think we each have our own little ones but my worst is knowing i'm wrong but still trying to defend myself. Then in doing so, only dig myself deeper in to anger and arguement with Neil while Hayden sits behind the drums with his mouth closed thinking of going on holiday. Then after all that me getting pissy, us playing an angry fast song very well and end up smiling again, only to repeat the whole process again shortly.

8. What inspired you to start Hype?

The garage rock sensation such as the White Stripes, The Datsuns, The Strokes etc... We soon after changed to the hi fi sound (it get's boring).

9. Who do you admire in NZ music at the moment?

Jon Toogood- He's just a fantastic show man. I think that Shihad are a great example of a band who has been around all throughout the grunge revolution to come out the other side still playing heavy music and making great albums.

10. What rumour would you like to start about yourselves?

"Hype signed a contract with Capitol!"

About Hype

Hype is an explosive Rock and Roll band from Christchurch. Critics have desribed their music as "Blues on fire, with a drop of acid." The band has swept up a frenzy in the Christchurch live scene attracting label interest and a growing fan base.

Hype formed in High School in mid 2003. Starting out as a Garage (or Garbage) rock style band to try and ride the then big garage band wagon, they ditched the style and went to new adventures in hi fi in aim to start their own revolution.

Hype have since played countless shows around the Christchurch area and demo'd loads of songs. "Our biggest goal is to take over this world" says bassist Neil. "I think what we have to offer will intice people" added Joe. Look out for this up and coming amazing alt rock band.
