Combining a mix of huge fuzzy and sometimes quirky riffs, groove-laden drums, beautiful falsetto vocals mixed with arena commanding screams and a level of songwriting that some say has been missing from rock for some time,  Dead Favours have been quick to grab the attention of the New Zealand music scene and are going from strength to strength in a very short time. Kerry from Muzic.net.nz spoke to Jared from Dead Favours and here's what went down:

How did you originally form as a band? Where are you guys from originally?

Dead Favours actually sparked over Facebook. Charlie posted a message asking if anyone wanted to have a jam and I responded and said let's catch up and talk over a beer.

Charlie had played with Kyle in Fire at Will so we called him, and he was keen, and then we asked Ross if he’d be keen to play bass.

A few weeks later we were jamming, and Dead Favours was born.

Will has recently joined the band replacing Ross and he also played in Fire at Will with Charlie and Kyle so that’s how he is connected.

We all live in Auckland. Kyle was born in South Africa but has been in NZ for a long time.

How long has Dead Favours been together and how did you come up with the name?

Dead Favours has been together just over 3 years. Charlie and I met for a beer in Dec 2015 and our first proper jam was in Jan 2016. I can’t believe it’s been 3 years already!!

Our name took us a while to get. We were actually a band for 4 months without a name, then we landed a gig opening for The Jordan Luck Band and we had scramble to find a name to put on the posters.

We went back and forth with about 100 different names and eventually picked Dead Favours, which is the title of one of the first songs we ever wrote!

Which artists have been your most influence to you as a band? And how did you come up with your style of music?

We have a few different tastes which lends us to mixing various styles of music when writing, but there are a few that are pretty heavily influential.

Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Royal Blood, Jeff Buckley, The Beatles, Arctic Monkeys, Violent Soho and The Black Keys to name a few.

What are your favourite venues and cities to play on tour? What’s the weirdest experience you've had on tour?

It might sound cliché, but Auckland is usually one of our best cities as it’s our hometown.

We also love getting down to the south island to play. Both Christchurch and Dunedin go off!!

Favourite venues would have to be San Fran in Welly and The Kings Arms (RIP) in Auckland. The KA was such a rad venue.

What's coming up music wise in the near future for Dead Favours? What inspires the music you make?

We are working really hard to finish off our album, which will be out in the next few months. We’re really excited as it's been 3 years to get to this point and it feels so good to finally have an album to play people.

We have a few more gigs and tours later in the year that we are just in middle of confirming and will announce soon. Keep an eye out for that!

I'd love to come up with a heart-warming story about the inspiration behind our music, but to be honest we are just 4 dudes that are really good mates and love to have a few tequilas, eat some wings and play some loud music.

When we play shows, we just have a bunch of fun and make it a party, and I think that’s what inspires our music. We keep doing it because we love to do it!

Rumour has it there's a new tour with Dead Favours, Skinny Hobos and Coridian? If so where are you playing? And what is it like touring with other bands?

Yes, we are all playing some shows together! We’ve been on tour with the Skinny Hobos over the last 6 weeks and we have a few gigs left with Coridian on the bill too! Also, of course the muzic.net gig in May which we are all looking forward to playing.

We love touring with other bands. NZ is quite small so many of the people we gig with are good mates, so usually the shows turn into a bit of a party.

There are loads of great bands and cool people to play music with in NZ! That’s what makes it fun.

What advice would you give new musicians starting in the music industry?

My advice would be to play and play and play, write and write and write! The more you play and the more you write, the better you get!

Also, make sure you make the right relationships within the music industry. Being in a band is as much about the business side of it as it is the music!
