ASHY - Ashy talks about her new single and video 'Over You'

31 Aug 2018 // An interview by LoraThompson

ASHY is a young solo artist from Christchurch who gained the attention of both the local and international pop markets with her second single Jersey and has just dropped her latest single Over You. We caught up while she was in Auckland on business for a quick chat about song writing, music videos and her plans for the future.

So firstly, how do you pronounce your name?

It's kind of like Usher but Uh-Shee.

How long have you been making music?

I started playing guitar and singing at 11, then started writing my own songs at 13. It wasn’t long before I was approached about being in a band. Through this I was involved in rockquest and play it strange throughout high school and branched out as a solo artist later on.

Other than writing lots, was there any specific things that you feel have helped develop and hone your song writing skills to get you where you are now?

I originally just wrote my songs on guitar because that’s all I had, but then as I got older I began to embrace technology more, using garage band software as a writing tool which meant I had the ability to use beats and keyboards etc. as well.

Also keeping up with the stuff my friends were writing or what was being put out at the events I was going to (Rockquest etc) and also stuff that was being played on the radio at the time.

What radio stations were you listening to for inspiration?

The Edge and ZM were my go to’s.

So how did it feel to have your last single Jersey was played on ZM after growing up listening to that station?

The results with that song were a dream come true. As well as making it to the top 20 in NZ it got quite a lot of streams in the US and the UK which was really awesome for me as I wrote the song about New Jersey, while I was in the America last year. I’ve got plans to get back over there in the near future to do some more co-writing.

You’ve just dropped your latest single which is called Over You, and the video is out now, tell us a little bit about that video.

We shot it in Christchurch at an American themed diner – we shot it at night when it was empty. The song is a dream scenario of what you would do if you had all the confidence in the world to say what you really need to say to your ex just before you left the relationship, and the video kind of follows that concept. It’s quite cool because there are only two characters in this diner and so the attention is all on us and the dramatization of the song.

The person who made is a guy called James Murray, he approached me originally and had a really great vision. He is very talented and has just moved to London to pursue his career over there.

So, you recorded this song with Scott Seabright and Ben Malone at Parachute studios, what was that like?

It was the first time that I had worked with another producer, previously I had always worked with just Scott so the addition of Ben as a co-producer he brought a lot of edgy flavour and good beats. It was also great having 3 people in the room rather than just two, I think over all we got a really good product.

And you mentioned to me earlier you are here in Auckland currently doing a bit of co-writing – who have you co-written with so far? and who would be your dream co-writer if you could choose anyone in the world?

I’ve been working with Josh Fountain over the past few weeks, I’ve co-written with Will Henderson who used to manage Parachute music as well. My dream co-writers would definitely include Julia Michaels, Emily Warren and Elisia Cara.

So, all female dream writers?

Yeah.

You’ve got a lot of hype around this new single now, where can people get out and see you perform it live?

So, at the moment I play regularly in Christchurch, and am currently working on putting together a live show with a full band – keep an eye on my socials for tour dates all over NZ early next year.

What would be your dream international opening slot?

Ariana Grande or Ellie Goulding if they came to NZ! I also think Dua Lipa is sooooo cool as well, it’s the same kind of vibe.

Check out the premier of Ashy’s video for her brand new single Over You on Spotify and YouTube.

So I have braved the cold winter evening to travel to the humble West Melbourne suburb of Maribyrnong, where the 4 Bakers Boys live in an old and rather run down 1970's home – with some of the original 1970's décor to match. "We've only got a temporary lease here, as they are going to knock it down soon" says CJ – quite a common issue for young Melbourne renters looking for a reasonably priced property.
