The Diamond Dead - Diamond Doll Newsletter Interview

23 Jun 2013 // An interview by Shade

Diamond Doll is a female fronted hard rock band from the Hawke’s Bay. Expect heavy but melodic; the hard edge of metal with a rock foundation and punk rock attitude. Diamond Doll bring the noise but they don’t forget the music. In April this year they released their debut EP album 'Plus None'. They answered the following questions for muzic.net.nz:

Which one of your songs are you most proud of, and why?

Twist, we've had really good feedback about it, and it seems to be the song that gets stuck in everyone's head. It's probably one of our more 'flowing' songs, but it's also a great song to play live as you can't help but get a bit lost inside of it - I think Rick Ecker of altered frequencies sums it up well - "Twist... is a heavy song that feels like it's pulling you down to kick your ass". It's also been a good song to experiment with in respect to incorporating samples (with an SPD-S sampler) to create a beefier, fuller sound without having to add another member. This is something we're continuing to experiment with in our new material.

What NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?

We would definitely like to hear more Kiwi rock bands on the radio in general. There seems to be a bit of a divide where bands categorize themselves too much, then you get the attitudes to suit. I think if we all left the attitudes at the door and stuck together, NZ 'Rock' (all inclusive, haha...) would flourish.

How would you describe Diamond Doll's music in one sentence?

Diamond Doll delivers a powerful no-frills style of music in a highly energetic fashion with aggressive vocals that are contrasted by softer, more vulnerable moments.

What has been your most memorable show to date?

That would have to be our farewell gig with/for our previous bassist Hogga, who left for Melbourne at the start of this year. He definitely said goodbye in style by managing to remove all his clothes except his studded belt and then proceeding to entertain the remaining patrons by dancing on the bar.

What local albums have you been enjoying recently?

Generation Dead has just released their 4-track EP, make sure you check out In Fear of Fear, wicked amping track. A couple of us have also been thrashing Solace by Jakob.

What is Diamond Doll’s long term goal?

To keep going... the hardest thing in a band is to stay together, so ultimately that is our long term goal.

What can we expect to see from Diamond Doll over the next year?

We'll be hitting the road again to promote our debut EP Plus None, and will be releasing a video for our new single from this EP, Twist.

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

If it's your aim to play in a band but don't think you're good enough, just go for it anyway. It's the most fun environment (in our opinion) to play in, and you'll learn and develop with your band members. Sometimes your limitations can be the catalyst to creating something more original and creative, because your restrictions make you consider the essence of what you're trying to communicate.

It's one thing to produce music from within two different genres, but it's a completely different thing to master each genre to perfection. One person who has mastered two genres to perfection is Dave Johnston - the hard hitting drummer from one of NZ's most well-known Rock acts, Villainy, also creates  immersive indie-electronica / EDM music as n1ghtmar3cat.
