Dislocate - Dislocate Interview 13/01/13

13 Jan 2013 // An interview by Asmith
I had a talk to Marty Kent, bass player for Dislocate, after their recent gig at Beyond The Black Festival, here's what he had to say...

How long has Dislocate been together?

1 1/2 years.

How did you come up with the name Dislocate?

We wanted something that sounded Metal.

How would you describe your music to people who have never heard you before?

Driving, hard hitting, melodic.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Deftones, Incubus, Refused, Slipknott, Lagwagon, Rush and Primus.

What is your favorite gig you have played so far?

Lloyd Halls Booze and Bands (first one) gig. The most fun I've had. We're doing the third one on April 27. Gonna be rad.

If you could play with any band in the world who would it be?

Don't care. We'll play with anyone.

If you could play any venue in the world where would it be?

LA Forum.

How did you find the experience of playing at Beyond The Black?

Awesome. So many good bands and such a good vibe.

What are we going to see from Dislocate in 2013?

More music and more gigs.

What is the best part about being a musician?

Sharing the stage with my four favourite musicians of all time.

What's in your personal music collection?

A Backstage pass from Rush's Grace Under Pressure tour (a first wedding anniversary present from my wife).

Who is your favorite NZ band and why?

The Heathen Collective. They're just awesome.

Name an up and coming NZ band you think people should check out?

Too many to name.
Devile, Gunt, The Heathen Collective, Broke (anything the Hill Brothers put their hands to is amazing).

What's the funniest thing you have seen at a gig/on tour?

When Baindy (Vocals) and I were in KnifeParty, we used to get a chap called Pat Hannan up to play Headup (Deftones), and Pat fully fell of the stage (at Bodega) but never missed a note and screamed his ass off flat on his back.

What's your most embarrassing gig/tour moment?

When we opened for Aftermath at the dirty Angus (Lower Hutt) and first note in I got major cramp in my picking hand and had to play like a moron (well, more than usual) for the gig.

What advice would you give to other aspiring musicians?

Never put a dollar sign in front of music. You'll just loose and be disappointed.

When not playing music, what else do you do in your spare time?

Listening to music.

When is your next release?

Hopefully in 2013.

How do you keep in contact with your fans?

Fans?

If you could create a rumor about Dislocate what would it be?

That we DON'T have the biblical version of Jesus in our band (Matt Fitzpatrick, Guitar)
