Geoff Ong - Geoff Ong Newsletter Interview

28 Jun 2012 // An interview by Shade

Geoff answered the following questions for muzic.net.nz:

What will your next release be?

In the very near future I’ll be releasing my second music video, for my single 'Implications' (http://soundcloud.com/geoffong/implications). I’m super excited about this video – we had a big group of about 50 dancers come along and do a humungomassive choreographed dance number in a supermarket for the finale! The release show is going to be at Zeal West, in Henderson, Auckland so keep a look out for that!

How do you come up with your lyrics?

I guess I write the same way most people do – from experience! If there’s something on my mind, I find the best way to get it out is to write a song about it. 99% of the time, the thing on my mind when I’m writing a song is a girl! I just hope the girls I write the songs about don’t know that the songs are about them! I have a feeling they might, though… Awkward.

Who would you most like to support live?

Taylor Swift, no question. This IS going to happen! Haha

How do you believe you fit into the NZ music industry?

I feel like I’m still finding my feet in the industry. At the moment I’m really just trying everything to see where I fit in – I’ve been involved in everything from jazz orchestras to hardcore bands to session work to theatre to glee clubs! However, I definitely think that everything I do helps me to discover who I want to be and where I want to go as a musician.

What can you never leave home without?

My iPod, my headphones, and a jaunty sense of optimism that today is going to be a good day.

How would you describe your music?

Feel-good pop! The stuff I’m writing currently has a lot of soul and R&B influence, but previously (including my debut EP, ‘Pictures’) my songs had much more of a folk/country sound. Generally I just want my music to make people feel happy!

What is the best part of being a musician?

Being able to brighten up people’s days with music! It’s an amazing gift to be able to play music, and getting the chance to share it is even better.

How do you keep in contact with your fans?

I use my Facebook page a lot (I’m also starting to learn about Twitter… then I’ll move on to Tumblr, and next, THE WORLD!) and I like to post about stuff which I think people can relate to, as opposed to just telling people to come to my next show. I also like to post demos and snippets of songs I’m working on, to get people interested in my next release. I think it definitely helps engage with people when they can comment and discuss things on your posts, as opposed to just getting info about a gig or event.

What rumour would you like to start about yourself?

Something linking myself and Taylor Swift, preferably romantically...

About Geoff Ong

Geoff Ong wants to be a pop star for dorks. “I love all the sounds and melodies of pop music, but I never really felt like I was cool enough to relate to the people performing it,” he says. “I figure there must be other people out there who feel the same way – my music is for them.”

Geoff’s 2018 single, Fingerprints, a shimmering slice of soulful indie pop, was recorded in his bedroom in Kingsland, with production, mixing and mastering by Phil Levine of the illustrious Igloo Music Studios in Los Angeles, who won two Grammy Awards for their work on 2016’s box office hit, La La Land.

Fingerprints made an immediate impact, peaking at #3 on the Hot NZ Singles Chart and #25 on the overall Hot Singles Top 40 Chart. It was also featured on ZM, The Edge, The Edge TV, and Radio New Zealand.
