Oslo Brown - Oslo Brown Newsletter Interview

21 Aug 2011 // An interview by Shade

What can we expect to see from Oslo Brown over the next year?

Lots of shows, hopefully a tour and our debut CD. We really want to connect with a wider range of people and build a loyal fan base

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

Practice, practice practice! Make sure everything you do is at a professional level and remember the music comes first.

Who are your favourite NZ musicians/bands, and why?

Bic Runga, her style is so unique. Shihad, what more do we need to say!

What will Oslo Brown’s next release be?

Debut CD. We also have two videos to be released soon.

Who would you most like to support live?

KT Tunstall, Ben Harper, Anna Coddington and Julia Deans.

How do you believe Oslo Brown fits into the NZ music industry?

We are unique and have a very individual sound, but we are still true to our roots and have the essence of the “New Zealand sound”.

What can you never leave home without?

Pick, kazoo, pen and paper.

How do you describe Oslo Brown’s music?

Interesting, dynamic, easy to relate to, different and unique.

What is your favourite NZ venue?

There are too many to list! So we have chosen a few: The Regent Theatre in Palmerston North, Café One 2 One and Bunker Hill.

What is the best part of being a musician?

The feeling you get when you sing and/or play. The feeling of not being in this world for that moment. Creating your art and sharing it with people while having a connection with them and enhancing their lives.

What is in your CD collection at home?

Eva Cassidy, Rory Gallagher, Janis Joplin, System of a Down, The Doors, Brooke Fraser, Howlin Wolf, Hollie Smith, Family Catus, Primus, Pearl Jam, Pantera, Tom Waits, Tool, The Mamas and The Papas, The Tremeloes, Joe and Eddie, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, the list really does just go on and on!

What is your favourite place in NZ to be?

In our practice room.

What is the best gig you have ever performed at, and why?

We have had some amazing gigs at Bunker Hill. There is something special about that place and the people who go there.

How do you keep in contact with your fans?

We post all our shows on MySpace and everyday we update our Facebook page letting people know when and where we’ll be that night.

What rumour would you like to start about Oslo Brown?

We are three moose in disguise. Charlie and Olivia are sisters and Melissa is our cousin.

About Oslo Brown

Oslo Brown is a pop trio from Auckland. Individually, they come from a variety of musical backgrounds.

The lead vocalist and ukulele bass player is Charlie. She is a classically trained pianist, and this expertise has loaned itself to her proficiency on the keyboard and bass. Charlie's musical background has mostly been in orchestras, jazz and concert bands.

The acoustic guitarist, Olivia whose lyrics and melodies so often come from the heart, and her life experiences, is also from a classically trained piano background. She has been a member of rock bands in and around Auckland, and, as well, spent over a year in Canada where she sang and played in an acoustic duo. Her ability on the acoustic guitar is intriguing to listen to. Olivia also 'drives' the Stomp box, and is a back-up vocalist.
