Chris Hurn - Chris Hurn Newsletter Interview

05 Jun 2011 // An interview by Shade

What can we expect to see from you over the next year?

Hopefully another album - and more shows. I recently finished touring around New Zealand which was great...would like to do that again.

How do you come up with your lyrics?

Unfortunately I never get much notice. Something will hit me, and I just have to stop what I'm doing and get it down as quick as I can.

There's a sweet spot in between being emotionally swayed and being anaylytical about whatever it is I'm writing about.

If I manage to find that spot, then the lryics come out.

Who would you most like to support live?

Brett Dennen and Kristian Matsson

What is the best part of being a musician?

For me its the feeling I get when I've just written a song and I'm working on the demo! My favourite part of the whole process is songwriting and arranging.

What is your favourite place in NZ to be?

Lower Hutt...Shhh!

What NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?

More from the guys who were in the Electric Confectionaires. Was a great band.

How do you keep in contact with your fans?

I just started a facebook page...so please visit/like it!

About Chris Hurn

Chris Hurn is a folk-pop singer/songwriter from Lower Hutt, and now based in Auckland. After playing in various local bands, including Play it Strange 2007 winners The Lunch Box Boys, a 60's style indie-pop band, he discovered a love for folk music and decided to go solo in late 2009.

Inspired by the likes of Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen, he began to write a collection of songs that would soon become his first album. Although heavily influenced by his folk heroes, he draws upon a wide range of genres and styles of music. As well as having a soft spot for modern pop and rock, Chris has spent a considerable amount of time soaking up 60's pop groups, notably The Mamas and the Papas, The Beatles and the Kinks.

Coming from a multi-instrumental background, Chris commenced his musical endeavours at a young age with the piano and a cheap plastic recorder. His first album is heavily based around the acoustic guitar but whistles, clicks, claps, harmonica and harmonies also play a big part in the sound.

It's one thing to produce music from within two different genres, but it's a completely different thing to master each genre to perfection. One person who has mastered two genres to perfection is Dave Johnston - the hard hitting drummer from one of NZ's most well-known Rock acts, Villainy, also creates  immersive indie-electronica / EDM music as n1ghtmar3cat.
