What is the best gig you have ever performed at, and why?
Highlife New Years Matakana 08/09. The crowd was big, the P.A. was big, and everyone (ourselves included) were there to party.
What is your favourite NZ venue?
It would be a toss up between the Coroglen Tavern and the Piha R.S.A and Piha Surf Club. Coroglen is just a great venue, really nice to play at and people always turn out and have a great evening. Piha is like playing a ‘home game’, the band played a few shows there in the early days and we try and get back there every year to play.
What NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?
Liquid Colours – they are an awesome 4 piece funk/soul/r’n’b group from Auckland who are amazingly talented and have big things ahead of them. They have opened for us a couple of times and always blow us away. The Phil Edwards Band are a great up and coming band (featuring our guitarist Tom Charlson) who promise to be another great band.
What is your most embarrassing on tour/gig moment?
Wow, embarrassing is something Tahuna do with ease. The top of the list is still probably when we were departing for our first national tour a couple of years ago. The guys got up early on a Tuesday morning to start the drive from Auckland to Christchurch. After being on the road for a few hours they had a driver behind them flashing them and honking his horn. They decided to pull over and see what the problem was. “Mate, you guys have been leaving a trail of destruction since Otorohanga”! Someone had forgotten to lock the trailer. Four guitars, a floor tom and a box of new CDs had been lost out the back. The van then spent the next couple of hours driving back along the road looking for lost items. Someone managed to spot two guitar cases in a ditch on the side of the road and we reclaimed one electric and a bass – the cds, drum and other guitars were both lost. Definitely our best screw up to date!
How did you come up with the band name Tahuna Breaks?
Although we’d love to tell tales of the great Tahuna’s around the country, it comes from the street of the first ‘jam’ room of the band, (Tahuna Street in Herne Bay). Breaks, refers to surfing, beaches and all other things summer.
How do you describe your music?
“RAAARRRRR”. James Brown getting in a knife-fight with Rick James while Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye discuss Politics over tea and crumpets.
What can we expect to see from Tahuna Breaks over the next year?
A new album and a lot of shows, sweating up venues all over the country.
What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?
“Hair is the first thing, and teeth the second. Hair and teeth, a man got those two things he's got it all”. - James Brown

About Tahuna Breaks
Combining aspects of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s Tahuna Breaks are influenced by artists as varied as James Brown to Daft Punk. Being unafraid to mix genres they have honed their live sound to encompass funk, disco, soul and roots focusing on addictive rhythms that get audiences moving.
The band has performed at The Big Day Out, Homegrown, Highlife NYE and many other major festivals in New Zealand and Australia, along with countless sell out national tours and one off performances.
