Bulletproof - Bulletproof Newsletter Interview

25 May 2008 // An interview by Shade
What is the best gig/event you have ever performed at, and why?

There’s been so many its hard to compare, but recently, it would have to be one of either Paris or Ljubljana Slovenia. When I played Paris last year my show happened to be on the same night that the All Blacks lost to France in the world cup. The French folk were absolutely rowdy, and the fact that they had just beaten my team seemed to give them an extra motivation to show me how hard the French can really party. It was epic. The other would be at a club called K4 in Ljubljana Slovenia, where I played last September. It was so rammed, the vibe was electric and it was just one of those nights any DJ would feel privileged to play. (You can find photos of both events on the Bulletproof MySpace)

What is your favourite NZ venue?

INK/Coherent - Best Club, Best System, Best Bar owner, Best Bar Manager, and THE BEST Bar staff in New Zealand hands down. Apart from that the vibe in there is hard to match....

What can we expect to see from you over the next year?

I am heading back to Europe on tour to promote & tour the 'Dark Times Desperate Measures' album for 5 weeks from June, in which time I will most probably start work on my next album by collaborating with some good friends and respected artists. I also produce Dubstep under the alias of Razorgang, so I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth deeper into that side of production.

What other NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?

Bring back the Mint Chicks! One of the baddest and most original bands to have ever graced New Zealand music. Next for me would be Cut Off Your Hands. I also think some of the hip hop talent in New Zealand is phenomenal. I’ve just completed a tour with rappers PNC & David Dallas (former of Frontline), and to me, these guys are both world class rappers, and I can’t wait for their new albums.

If you could, what rumour would you start about yourself?

That I won lotto - and spent my entire winnings on beer and cigarettes.

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

Don’t sell your publishing! Don’t sell your soul! Don’t sell out! - But.... If you want to make some money for the short term, Sell your publishing, sell your soul, and sell out! At the end of the day, it’s hard to make any money in this industry if you aren’t prepared to move with the times. A lot of the majors don’t have a clue about the direction the market is heading because they’re mostly just groups of old men who don’t have a clue about the music, and are all far too busy wondering where all their profits have gone. Its all about the digital market. That’s how you will make a name for yourself, at minimal expense, to a major audience. There are more people listening online than there are in the top floor conference rooms of Sony and Universal at any given time! Apart from that, surround yourself with the right people, Management, Agents etc. They are out there! And most of all, Be true to yourself your music and your audience.

It's one thing to produce music from within two different genres, but it's a completely different thing to master each genre to perfection. One person who has mastered two genres to perfection is Dave Johnston - the hard hitting drummer from one of NZ's most well-known Rock acts, Villainy, also creates  immersive indie-electronica / EDM music as n1ghtmar3cat.
