White Island - White Island Newsletter Interview

05 Nov 2007 // An interview by Shade
White Island is a guitar based rock outfit comprised solely of David Bennett and can be accessed via MySpace at www.myspace.com/whiteislandmusic.

What is your greatest achievement?
My relationship with my wife and son, who are my biggest inspiration. I also found out recently that I will be featured in Guitar Player Magazine's "Editors Top Eight Section". As a completely self-taught guitarist, this is a really satisfying result.

What do you think could be done to make NZ music even better?
I believe we need to build more infrastructure and partnership with our Australian counterparts as the population in New Zealand is just not large enough to sustain all the great music coming out of this country.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I would like to have secured a stable distribution process for my music with room for growth, either through a label, or independently. I would like to have cultivated a loyal base of listeners, and to have grown musically.

What is the best thing about making music?
I enjoy writing and recording music that will last forever - it's fun!

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?
Learn as much as you can about the music business. Become great on your instrument, learn about recording and live performance, learn about marketing, but most importantly, enjoy what you do.

About White Island

I’m David Bennett, Guitarist/Songwriter/Singer/Producer for my own musical outlet that I call “White Island”. I am a one-man band, covering all aspects of the creative process including song writing, all performance and design, right down to the production and engineering of my debut album. I am a completely intuitive musician and have never received a music lesson in my life, which I feel assists in imparting a genuine and natural feel to my music. My music is created in my own studio, which I call “Siamese Sound”.
I’ve been playing guitar for over 21 years, however this is my first creative output, which has been assisted by today's technology and my own DIY (do it yourself) attitude.

“Songs Of Love, Hate, Hope & Despair” is the first album by White Island.
The music has a modern rock sound, with highly emotional, personal lyrics, catchy choruses, and technically advanced lead guitar playing. The music comes from my heart and mind, and is the most natural expression of how I am feeling and what I want to create. I have not created this music with an audience in mind, although I do have a strong desire to touch people through my songs and playing.

The original songs of singer, pianist, producer and composer Lauren Nottingham have touched down on Earth under the moniker Frau Knotz.
