First Line Up Announcement for The Others Way 2018

18 July 2018 - 0 Comments

Flying Out and 95bFM are proud to present The Others Way on August 31 2018.

For the fourth year running, Auckland’s Karangahape Road is set to metamorphose into an oasis of fresh, unique local music, from indie to electronica, hip-hop to pop and much more…

Celebrating the best in alternative music from across the country (and a few from over the Tasman), every year The Others Way constantly features a dynamic selection of artists performing across a number of favoured K Road venues.

With 2018 promising to be another night to remember, we are proud to unveil the first line up;

Bailterspace

Once referred to as "the Sonic Youth of the Southern Hemisphere", this iconic NZ atmospheric noise-rock band are reforming again and returning home for the show, promising plenty from their extensive catalogue and some exciting new songs to boot.

The Beths

The Auckland four-piece's latest single Happy Unhappy was announced the Song of the Summer according to Rolling Stone, so what better band to have to see us through the end of winter. Recently signed to US label Carpark Records, their new album Future Me Hates Me is due outAugust 10.

Chapter Music Stage

They are one of our favourite independent Australian labels, and this year will see The Goon Sax, Gregor, Laura Jean and label co-founder Guy Blackman making their way across for a Chapter Music curated stage. Laura Jean is one upcoming artist to watch, with her recent synth-pop album Devotion picking up rave reviews and Pitchfork describing life-affirming second single Girls On the TV as “a pop song promise that things will eventually get better.” Brisbane indie-pop trio The Goon Sax (featuring frontman Louis Forster, son of Robert Foster from the Go-Betweens) are set to release their new album, We're Not Talking on September 14 and will be playing NZ for the first time.

Church & AP

This teenage hip-hop duo have been making waves in Auckland, recently receiving high praise from the likes of David Dallas and SWIDT. They've just dropped their impressive debut EP Thorough Bread.

Collision

Marking their first performance in 40 years iconic 1970s NZ funk band, Collision return to the stage having recently featured on the fantastic Heed The Call compilation album, they are guaranteed to bring funk, soul, and groove in spades.

Die! Die! Die!

NZ's pop/punk/post-punk darlings are back in town with former bassist Lachlan Anderson in tow, following on from their scintillating set at this year's Laneway Festival the three-piece will be playing tracks from their full discography and some new numbers ahead of recording album number seven.

Estère

Wellington's Estère punctuates meaty electronic beats with an elastic voice and punchy melodies and is bringing her dynamic three-piece band and strange brand of Electric Blue Witch-Hop to the stage.

The Headless Chickens

Playing a set to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of their album Stunt Clown (which also won this year's Taite Music Prize Classic Album Award) the Headless Chickens have reunited for this show, which will be a fitting ribute to their recently departed friend and bandmate Grant Fell. Performing on the night will be Chris Matthews, Anthony Nevison, Michael Lawry, Fiona McDonald, Bevan Sweeney and Rupert E. Taylor.

Melodownz

Melodownz hip hop lyricist (Bronson Price), is an urban poet and artist raised in the phone line tangled urban village of Avondale, Auckland, New Zealand. He traverses backdrops of boom bap, g funk, reggae, soul and hip hop with ease, dropping nuggets of wisdom, synonyms and analytical versification. From feel good partay vibes that will keep your head nodding to pre-tinder date jitters, or an epic song for a local boxer as he enters the ring, musically, Melodownz has you covered.

Superette

Part of Flying Nun's 90's wave of new bands, Superette stood out for their playful sense of melody and propelling driving rhythms. Fronted by David Mulcahy of JPSE, and joined by Ben Howe and Greta Anderson, the three piece return ahead of the expanded reissue of their album Tiger.

Troy Kingi & The Galactic Chiropractors

Kingi's latest album Shake That Skinny Ass All The Way To Zygertron is a sprawling sci-fi soul odyssey inspired by interstellar love, mystic prophesy, and 70's cosmic funk artists Funkadelic. His single 'Aztechknowledgey just made the top 20 Silver Scroll finalists and will be bringing his full funk-soul band to The Others Way

Wax Chattels

After an extraordinary performance at TOW last year saw them signed to Captured Tracks and Flying Nun and secured them a spot at Laneway, how could we not, NOT have them back? Currently winning over fans across the US, this three piece are back in NZ bringing with them their darkly hypnotic guitarless guitar music.

Also featuring on the line up are local favourites Hopetoun Brown, Miss June and Mulhollandand Wellington's Girl Boss & HansPucket. While Dunedin's Soaked Oats and Death and the Maiden are also travelling up to join in the fun and with more acts to be announced, stay tuned for the second line-up and more details soon.
