Emily Fairlight Releases Sophomore Album – 'Mother of Gloom'

04 May 2018 - 0 Comments

Following on from the success of her recent single, The Escape, Emily Fairlight releases her stunning 12-track sophomore album, Mother Of Gloom.

The album, brimming with lush, dreamy soundscapes, was recorded in Austin, Texas, with Doug Walseth of The Cat’s Eye Studio, with backing instrumentation from a heady dose of talented musicians, featuring Cully Symington (Bright Eyes and Okkervil River), Doug Walseth and Andrew Bain (Fur Patrol).

7 years after Emily released her self-titled debut, her sophomore album, Mother Of Gloom, named after a Martha Wainwright lyric, is a mature and pensive piece of work that leads the listener on a journey of devastatingly honest storytelling told with fragile, open-hearted lyrics. Emily’s unique and bewitching vocal delivery evokes the feeling of 70’s-esque Laurel County alt-folk by the likes of Judy Collins.

“There are countless written songs that have come and gone since the release of my first album, but only in the last couple of years have I felt my writing change into something I wanted to share. "Mother of Gloom" (a Martha Wairight lyric) has been a common visitor over the last two years, so seemed a fitting blanket for these songs.” - Emily Fairlight

Mother of Gloom is accompanied by the release of Emily’s second single, Drag The Night In, with an adorably quirky video directed and produced by Emily, along with director of photography Julian Vares and support from NZ On Air.

Emily is a Wellington-based poet and songwriter, who has been composing and performing for over a decade across Australia, New Zealand and the USA. She will be celebrating the release of Mother of Gloom with shows at Lyttelton Records (Christchurch) on May 25th, and San Fran (Wellington) on June 2nd, followed by a national tour later in the year. $15 pre-sale tickets available from Under The Radar.
