Music News - 2018 AOTNZ Menu - First up - Flora and Sean

2018 AOTNZ Menu - First up - Flora and Sean

14 December 2017 - 0 Comments

Recipients of the 2017 New Zealand Gold Guitars Overall Runner Up award, including winning the ‘Traditional Country’ and ‘The Freeze Ya Bits of Busking’ sections, the pair formed a musical bond a couple of years ago and have dedicated themselves ever since to gathering stories, songs and fiddle tunes from small communities around the world.

The two met in Toronto before Flora moved to West Virginia to apprentice to an old-time musician there. Several months later they embarked on a pilgrimage of sorts through the Appalachian Mountains and then south to Cajun country.  Flora persuaded Sean to accompany her next on a square dancing music tour held in rural halls all over New Zealand, and he’s lived here ever since

Their self-titled ‘Flora and Sean’ debut record is made up of songs and tunes they’ve gleaned on travels around the US, Canada and Australasia, learning their music from a variety of sources – from mentors and older generation musicians, from those taking part in square dances and honky tonks, and from 78rpm records as well as their peers.

“…a superb set from Sean Donald and Flora Knight, fiddle and guitar, both singing. Close your eyes and it’s music from a crackling old American country and western radio show.” – North and South Magazine

The trust receives funding from Creative New Zealand as well as support from Central Lakes Trust, Community Trust of Southland, Interislander, Otago Community Trust, Rata Foundation and the Southern Trust. AOTNZ liaises with local arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups to bring the best of musical and theatrical talent to country districts. The AOTNZ programme is environmentally sustainable – artists travel to their audiences rather than the reverse.
