10 October 2017 - 0 Comments

The Tuning Fork and 95bFM's Border Radio are delighted to announce the debut NZ show by celebrated U.S. Americana musician, Sam Outlaw. Along with special guest Courtney Marie Andrews who returns to our shores for the second time this year.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30th - TUNING FORK, AUCKLAND

Sam Outlaw came into the musical limelight with his debut album Angeleno (2015) having garnered the attention of Ry Cooder who came on to produce the record along with his son, Joachim Cooder. That record opened doors leading the ex-advertising executive turned country music star to 18 months of international touring. He entertained thousands of festival-goers with a prime slot at Coachella’s country music sister event, Stagecoach, made four trips to Europe, toured Australia twice and played several hundred gigs in the USA.  November 2017 sees Sam Outlaw making his premier performance in New Zealand.

Music writers often link Outlaw’s style to fellow Californian country stars Dwight Yoakam and Merle Haggard alongside the enormously influential Gram Parsons and Townes van Zandt. Outlaw describes it as “ ‘SoCal Country’: a sun-bleached, Baja-influenced twang”.

This year’s release of  sophomore album Tenderheart, a 13-track collection of originals, met with rave reviews including The Australian newspaper who in its 4.5 Star review proclaimed "On his second album the 34-year-old delivers a gem infused with the musical history of his adopted city, as well as Nashville, Austin and every dance hall and honky tonk in between” while Rolling Stone Magazine gave it a 4 Star review and called Tenderheart, “an assured step forward for this rising country star.”

Sam Outlaw continues to add notches to his awards belt as a finalist for Americana U.S.’s Emerging Artist 2017 award (previously won by Mumford & Sons, Sturgill Simpson, Alabama Shakes),  Americana UK Awards 2017 Winner of the International Album of the Year for debut album, Angeleno and as a finalist in the British Country Music Awards 2017  for International Touring Act of the Year and International Song of the Year (Tenderheart) which are being announced October 22, 2017.

“A legitimate contender to be the biggest country star L.A. has produced since Dwight Yoakam.”LA Weekly

"Exceptionally serene …Tenderheart is easy to get lost in.”NPR

"Tenderheart is an assured step forward for this rising country star. Four stars” Rolling Stone

“On the cusp of music stardom” - Los Angeles Times

After being embraced and shown the love by the Auckland audience on her tour here earlier this year the amazingly talented Courtney Marie Andrews is coming back. At just 16 years old, Andrews left home in Arizona for her first tour. Travelling up and down the West Coast of the USA, busking and playing anywhere that would have her. Soon after, she took a Greyhound bus four nights straight from Phoenix to New York to do the same on the East Coast. Her 2016 album ‘Honest Life’, the follow up to the stellar ‘On My Page’, has been praised by media universally with the UK’s Daily Telegraph saying “the poetic economy of her lyrics is right up there with such masters of the country vignette as Guy Clark and John Prine…a truly substantial talent” . That’s some big association's right there.

This November the future of Americana will be shown to be in the excellent hands of Sam Outlaw and Courtney Marie Andrews. Do not miss it.
