Music News - Soundsplash Festival Keeps It Green

Soundsplash Festival Keeps It Green

25 November 2016 - 0 Comments

Renowned for its great music line-up and stunning location, Raglan’s Soundsplash also leads the summer festival pack in its commitment to progressive environmental and sustainability practices.

2017 will once again see Soundsplash partner with a number of local and national organisations in a quest to create their greenest festival yet.

The three-day January event has a long history of pioneering eco-friendly initiatives. An originator in the zero-waste festival movement, this summer Soundsplash will again partner with Raglan’s Xtreme Zero Waste to implement waste diversion systems, with an aim of beating the already-impressive 82% diversion rate from 2016’s festival. In total, almost 62m3 of material was collected from the site, over 70% of which was recycled or composted, with the majority of the remainder being sent to landfill.

On-site camping also provides an environmental focus point. Early messaging has already gone out to campers encouraging them to pre-and recycle during their Soundsplash stay, and to leave behind an empty site. An increased number of recycling stations will be in place throughout campgrounds, with monitor stations operating 24 hours. All leftover food and camping equipment will be sorted and donated to Waikato Environment Centre’s Kaivolution and Extreme Zero Waste recycling store Kaahu’s Nest respectively.

Conscious of their incredible coastal location, Soundsplash will once again keep an eye towards protecting our oceans. Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) and Karioi – Maunga ki te Moana will both offer workshops at the festival, and Plastic Bag Free Raglan will be on hand offering bio bags and raising awareness on the impact of plastics on both the sea and landfill.

All on-site stallholders must commit to selling recyclable or compostable products, and other workshops and vendors have been selected to enhance the wellbeing of festival attendees. On offer will be traditional Māori healing practices and medicine, nutritional advice, yoga, mindfulness workshops and more.

Soundsplash also supports its local community by offering free tickets for volunteers from a number of Raglan-based non-profit eco organisations.

Tickets to Soundsplash available at eventfinda.co.nz. Make sure you’re there to experience the top music lineup, stunning surroundings, great all-ages environment and commitment to positive change that make Soundsplash a must-do this summer.
