Hamilton Underground Press Presents ‘Future City 2017’

11 November 2016 - 0 Comments

Hamilton Underground Press today announced the initial line-up for its inaugural music festival, FUTURE CITY 2017.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Camp A Low Hum and Chronophonium, FUTURE CITY 2017 will showcase some of the best underground music from around the country, with a few gems from overseas thrown in for good measure. NYC native Alexa Dexa is the first of the overseas acts to be announced, whilst Auckland bands Wax Chattels and Invisible Threads, Wellington’s The Joint Chiefs and Katikati’s Threat.Meet.Protocol will be joined by Hamilton bands Contenders, Old Loaves, Celebrity Death Hoax, Rumpus Room and Halcyon Birds.

Arpie Shirlow started Hamilton Underground Press (HUP) in March 2015, in an attempt to help breathe life into the local music scene by being active in organising shows and supporting them through publishing zines, podcasts and online articles. Like-minded souls have joined along the way and HUP has flourished ever since.

"HUP is a lot work, but it’s also heaps of fun. It’s a hobby really, but we run it as professionally as possible. We are not-for-profit organisation, and just like to make sure that bands get paid. Future City is a way of crystallising where we are at, bringing neat bands to town to play with the neat bands we have here. We’ve had some very cool shows this year with Mermaidens, Soccerpractise, Street Chant, The Naenae Express, The Beths etc. coming to town, and despite Hamilton still being thought of as a cultural wasteland to many, we have some seriously good bands here and some great venues like Nivara Lounge. The name is obviously a play on the whole ‘Hamiltron: City of the Future’ thing, but in a gentle, loving way"

Future City 2017 will take place on the 3rd and 4th of March, across two venues, Nivara Lounge and Creative Waikato, both in the CBD. Around 30 bands will play in total. A couple of spots are still available, and interested bands are encouraged to get in touch.

A second announcement and ticketing information will follow in the coming weeks.
