Music News - Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra celebrates Pasifika flavours

Pasifika artists and music join forces with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) for its free Open Orchestra afternoon at Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau on Saturday 11 July.
New Zealand Music Awards winner Mark Vanilau sings three of his own songs with the APO, and singer Lavina Williams shares songs which she has been touring internationally, supported by the acclaimed Auckland Gospel Choir. The APO will also play new music by Auckland composer Opeloge Ah Sam, featuring talented singer Leila Alexander.
The APO is also delighted to welcome students from Sistema Aotearoa, who will be performing together with the full APO for the first time. The combined performance is just one of many highlights of APO’s Open Orchestra South, a free afternoon event that includes a range of music-related activities for children and their families.
APO Chief Executive Barbara Glaser says the APO’s free Open Orchestra events are a great way for families to enjoy an interactive and informal orchestral experience. “It’s wonderful to see adults and children enjoying the thrill of a live orchestra experience in a relaxed environment, and they’re always a lot of fun,” she says.
The afternoon’s programme concludes with a walk through the orchestra, where families can get up close to the musicians and the instruments while the orchestra plays classic movie music including the theme from Star Wars. The Sistema Aotearoa students will join the APO to perform music from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Rising New Zealand conductor Ray Chan returns to New Zealand to take the orchestra through the exciting programme of music. He is currently based in London, where he is one of just two international students accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Music conducting programme. “It is a huge privilege to be invited home from London to lead an orchestra which impacted my life as a youngster,” Ray says. “I'm especially excited to be engaged to do the most important work a young conductor can do; the continual inspiring of our young audiences and communities through the power of live, interactive and engaging music-making.”
