Music News - Dudley Benson Announces New Remix Album

Dudley Benson Announces New Remix Album

15 October 2014 - 0 Comments

Dudley Benson & Golden Retriever Records are thrilled to announce the November 3rd release of Deforestation, a new album of remixes of Benson’s critically acclaimed 2010 album Forest: Songs by Hirini Melbourne.

Three years in the curating, Benson has gathered a diverse cast of producers and contributors from around the world to re-imagine his Taite Prize-nominated acapella recordings of Hirini Melbourne’s classic bird waiata.

Deforestation features remixes and contributions from respected sonic magicians Matmos (US), Berlin’s electronica icon Barbara Morgenstern (Germany), prodigious glitch-pop producer Shuta Hasunuma (Japan), Kranky-signed ambient producer Justin Walter (US), New Zealand’s synth-pop enigma Stef Animal, and Dunedin’s reclusive drum-machine authority ISO12. Dame Anne Salmond appears as guest narrator in Dudley’s own remix of Kiwi, which also features taonga puoro by Waka Atea (Alistair Fraser & Rob Thorne). Cover artwork is by the celebrated outsider artist Susan Te Kahurangi King, subject of Dan Salmon’s 2012 film Pictures of Susan.

Deforestation is released on November 3rd, exclusively through dudleybenson.com. The album is available in two formats: a combined 180g 12” vinyl & CD package in a limited edition of 250, and digital download for any donation of $1 or more.

All profits from the sales of Deforestation go directly to the Ulva Island Charitable Trust, for their on-going conservation work on the bird sanctuary off Stewart Island.

Benson will launch Deforestation with one live show in Auckland on Saturday 1st November at The Audio Foundation. Tickets are limited to 75, and are available now at dudleybenson.com. He will also premiere a new work at the annual New Zealand Arts Awards on November 3rd in Auckland.

Dudley is currently producing his third album, the final in the trilogy that began with The Awakening (2008) and continued with Forest: Songs by Hirini Melbourne (2010).

Deforestation was mastered by Ben Sinclair for Images & Sound, Auckland.
