NZ National Hip Hop Dance Championships Competition Heats Up For 2014

27 April 2014 - 0 Comments

Over 500 dancers from across 5 NZ regions will go head to head at the Hip Hop International Street Dance NZ National Hip Hop Championships from 30th April – 3rd May at the Victory Convention Centre. 4 Days of the very best crews in New Zealand will be competing for coveted places that qualify them to represent NZ at the World Hip Hop Championships to be held in Las Vegas, August this year. Last year the National New Zealand team faced 43 other Countries.

“Street Dance NZ exists to ignite and empower the potential in the community. The competition has gone from strength to strength as the NZ hip hop scene has rapidly expanded with fresh new innovative talent, hungry to show the rest of the world what they’re got. It’s more than just a competition for us… it’s about developing a platform and pathway for the next generation to reach their dreams” says Street Dance NZ Director, Bev Adair.

“New Zealand has already gained a fierce reputation on the world stage with our crews across the four divisions bringing home silver medals last year. Our NZ Crews placed in the top 20 out of the 43 Countries competing. We so ‘punch above our weight on the Internationals stage!! All our crews represent New Zealand with a lot of pride and the world is watching us!!,” continued Bev ..

Street Dance NZ core values are about equipping, training and mentoring, our tamariki and rangatahi to do life well, and see their value. Dance is a great vehicle to reach our young people, and adds so much value to them and their families. ‘WE AS A COMMUNITY & A NATION BENEFIT WHEN OUR YOUNG PEOPLE ARE FUNCTIONING TO THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL’. Their talent will get them places BUT it will be their developed CHARACTER that will keep them there!!

Last year, THE ROYAL FAMILY choreographed by internationally renowned Parris Goebel took out the gold medal in the mega crew division for the third year running. First time competitors IDENTITY DANCE CREW took out the silver medal in the adult division missing out on the gold by a mere 1/100th of a point.

On the 30th 17 Auckland School Mega Crews come together to battle it out for the mega school title. On Thursday 5 - 8 main crews in the varsity and adult division have their preliminary rounds. Friday will be dedicated to preliminaries for mega crews and junior teams which this year have had a record number of entries.

And on Saturday for the first time…with Dujon Cullingford (DJ Stretch) and Harmz de Thierry,  Swag Fest Integration into HHI NZ Nationals, Swag Fest Mixed 2vs2 All-Style Battle.All-Style battles are typified by wit, skill & spontaneity while crowd interaction, musicality & flavour is paramount. In true street fashion, a live DJ, 2 MCs and crowd interaction is all part of the equation. The chance of integrating SwagFest into NZ’s national comp would bring about another dimension of community involvement and collective empowerment for our national dance scene.Saturday will feature the finals across all divisions.

A highlight will be guest performances from our very own SUPA family singing the National Anthem, Judges showcase and from the internationally recognized REQUEST DANCE CREW with Parris Goebel, and THE ROYAL FAMILY.

The competition will also feature educational workshops for dancers and team managers specifically designed to assist teams around effective promotion and fundraising. Tertiary Institutions will also have a presence as they encourage dancers to explore their career pathways as choreographers, dance professionals, and teachers making their mark in the industry.

Street Dance NZ are excited to have DANZ AOTEAROA the National body for dance on board to facilitate workshops.

It will be an incredible week of world-class dance.  Tickets are available now http://www.iticket.co.nz/
