Outward Sound Recipients 2012 Round 1

24 February 2012 - 0 Comments

Outward Sound is pleased to announce the 1st round of grant recipients for 2012.

Four Stage One grants were awarded.

Midnight Youth - Stage 1.

To coincide with the band's 2nd album release World Comes Calling the band has been invited to perform at Musexpo and the Radio Summit in LA.

The pre event to the music conference Musexpo, the Wordwide Radio Summit offers Midnight Youth the opportunity to showcase to global radio national program chiefs including CBS, Citadel, Clear Channel, Cox, Cumulus, Emmis, Entercom, Pandora, Sony Music UMG, WMG, Absolute Radio International (UK, Australia), Motor FM (Germany), P4 (Norway), XM Sirius, Sound Cloud, Westwood One, Premiere Radio Networks, Y Music, BBC Radio, Triple J Radio , Last.FM, Triton Media, Arbitron, ESPN Radio, Yahoo!, MTV/VH1 Radio, and PBS.

Midnight Youth's showcases will be building on the profile the band has already garnered from airplay on US radio including high profile stations WAXQ in New York and KTCL in Denver.

Midnight Youth's debut platinum album The Brave Don't Run scored 5 top 40 singles in NZ, #2 debut and the letter song was the most played track on NZ radio in 2009. The current album World Comes Calling debuted #4 on the NZ album chart, #1 iTunes Debut and #1 Rock Album and #1 Rock Radio Song with Who Said You're Free.

Street Chant - Stage 1.

Indie rockers with attitude Street Chant have had a busy year. Over the last twelve months they released their debut album Means in the USA and Australia, touring the former three times and the latter twice. The last US trip included showcases at CMJ 2011 (seven well-received shows) followed by a support tour for legendary 90's alternative band The Lemonheads, who were performing their classic album It's A Shame About Ray to packed houses.

This year Street Chant are widening their global reach with showcases at the high profile Great Escape festival in Brighton UK and live dates in the UK and Europe.

Tiny Ruins - Stage 1.

Hollie Fullbrook aka Tiny Ruins has been one of the surprise success stories of last year. Her debut album Some Were Meant For Sea garnered rave reviews across the globe with BBC Music making it album of the month for November 2011 and the UK's biggest music Magazine MOJO giving it four stars and proclaiming "watch out Laura Marling". BBC 6's Tom Ravenscroft wrote "Hollie Fullbrook, as her friends call her, manages to avoid the applied angst that so often ruins the work of British female singer-songwriters and has created a debut album of vast beauty."

Hollie is now touring the UK and Europe following up on this interest and supporting the release of her album in these territories through her label Spunk/SRD.

As well as playing a total of 17 shows across the territories she will be doing interviews and sessions on BBC2, BBC6 and XFM.

Cairo Knife Fight - Stage 1.

Two guys who whip up a melodic storm of riff-fired power that takes your mind, body and soul on a hallucinatory rock 'n' roll ride. That's Cairo Knife Fight.

Made up of Nick Gaffaney, who sings, drums, and plays bass synth (all at the same time), and guitarist and loop pedal guru Aaron Tokona, they build a groove and intensity so strong you can, in the words of Gaffaney, "build a house on it".

2011 saw the band perform standout showcases in New York City at the CMJ Music Marathon which resulted in the band receiving a deluge of critical praise both from online and traditional press as well as gaining both US management - via Crowd Control Management, Australian management - via Homesurgery, and an invitation to return to the US in March 2012 to play SXSW.

The band have been working alongside both management companies and specialist music marketing company Musebox since the end of last year to maximise their SXSW exposure.

"Cairo Knife Fight's music whips up a melodic storm of riff-fired power that takes your mind, body and soul on a hallucinatory rock 'n' roll ride. Think: Radiohead meets Kyuss meets Sigur Ros." - http://www.athousandguitars.com/

Applications for the next round of Outward Sound grants close on April 23rd 2012 at 5pm.
