Built on the corner of Church St and King Edward Parade in Devonport in 1866 it is one of the country's oldest taverns and has become a much loved home for local music on Auckland's North Shore. Owner Peter Thwaites is planing to develop it into a block of apartments and cafe, saying that the tavern no longer gives an acceptable return on the $2M investment. With Takapuna Grammar and Devonport in particular having been such a hotbed of genuine talent since 2000, there will be plenty of young bands lamenting the news. A long list of high school acts have profited from the tavern's rare and laudable encouragement of underage shows. The Masonic has helped foster the likes of The Checks, The Veils, The Electric Confectionaires and White Birds and Lemons.
