Wanaka’s inaugural YAMI Sounz Summit has reached its target of $5000 of donations through the Arts Foundation crowdfunding platform, Boosted. Directed towards the May 16 and 17 evening showcases, spokesperson Prairie Pritchett acknowledges huge gratitude to the local and national donors, saying it "confirms people are passionate about supporting grassroots New Zealand music, which is what YAMI is all about.”

Next month will see legends of the New Zealand music industry descend upon Wanaka for the Youth and Adults in the Music Industry weekend. Put together by Lake Wanaka SouNZ Inc (the team behind Rippon Festival), the event will span two days and involve a series of workshops and panel discussions to assist those keen on a musical career, in cultivating a financially viable future. The weekend will culminate with a showcase featuring the students’ work alongside Kiwi icon Dave Dobbyn.

Participants will have the opportunity to work with DJ Mu (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Anika Moa, Dave Dobbyn,  Barnaby Weir (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties), Devin Abrams (Shapeshifter), Craig Pearce (The Phoenix Foundation), MC Tali, Steven Marr and Indira Force (Doprah), Warren Maxwell (TrinityRoots), Anthony Healey (APRA), Kristin Bowman (Recorded Music NZ) and many more music experts throughout the weekend. A limited number of spaces are still available to join this event.

Festival Director, Lynne Christie acknowledges the contribution from many groups and individuals who have supported this non-profit event to get off the ground. She says, ‘the support and generosity of the artists is the foundation of the event.  Funding and support from local businesses, council, grants, the Boosted campaign, plus many hours from the volunteer group behind the scenes have meant that the event is community supported at its core.”

Two showcases will be open to the public. TrinityRoots will perform as part of their Citizen album release at the
Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday 16^th of May. On Sunday 17^th May some YAMI participants will perform alongside Dave Dobbyn to showcase what they have covered over the weekend.

Staged by the not-for-profit, Lake Wanaka SouNZ Inc, Wanaka’s first YAMI puts any profits back into future music events and education within the region. The hope is that YAMI will become an annual event, serving as an incubator for the development of talent within the New Zealand music industry.
