First Line-up Announcement for Parihaka International Peace Festival 2010

The first confirmed acts have been announced for the fifth anniversary Parihaka International Peace Festival. Up to 30 other acts will be confirmed before the event, held at the historic Parihaka Pa in South Taranaki between 7 and 11 January 2010.

Confirmed are Brisbane bands Kooii and Kingfisher, the newly-formed Bellbirds, Herbs, King Kapisi, L.A. Mitchell, Ladi 6, the Lewis McCallum Orchestra, Moana & The Tribe, Rio Hunuki Hemopo and SJD.

Kooii and Kingfisher are fronted by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Peter Hunt, making his third appearance at the festival – in 2007 he performed with Yeshe & The World Citizens, and last year with Parihaka band Nga Morehu. Kooii and Kingfisher are partly sponsored by a scholarship, a collaboration between the Parihaka International Peace Festival and the Island Vibe Festival held on Queensland’s Stradbrook Island.

The Bellbirds will be making their first major public appearance at Parihaka and is comprised of Sean Donnelly (SJD), Don McGlashan, Sandy Mill and Victoria Kelly. The band describes its sound as “a baroque ‘60s pop sensibility with bitter-sweet lyrics.”

Herbs will be making a rare public appearance, featuring Dilworth Karaka, Tama Lundon, Tama Renata, Thom Nepia and Morrie Watene. Their extended set will be culled from their 30-year career.

King Kapisi’s set will include guest performers, including Teremoana Rapley. Kapisi and Teremoana will also host a teenagers’ performance workshop during the weekend.

Rio Hunuki Hemopo, formerly of TrinityRoots and who has recently toured overseas with Fat Freddy’s Drop, will be fronting his own band in one of his first major public performances.

Two stages will feature at the festival, along with a speakers' forum, film tent, extended children's recreation and more. Acclaimed choirmaster Stephen Taberner will again organise and rehearse the Parihaka Festival Choir.

Early Bird Tickets, priced at $175, are now available for a limited time, only at www.parihaka.com. Pre-Gate Tickets will rise to $195, which includes camping and parking. One day passes are also available – further details at www.parihaka.com

Fat Freddy’s Drop added to growing Parihaka lineup

Legendary New Zealand band Fat Freddy’s Drop has been announced as a further major act at the 2010 Parihaka Peace Festival, in South Taranaki on 7-11 January.

Fat Freddy’s will make their first New Zealand performance following their European and British tour to promote their latest album, Dr Boondigga and the Big BN. They were last seen at Parihaka at the inaugural Peace Festival in 2006.

“We’re honoured to welcome Fat Freddy’s Drop back to Taranaki and to Parihaka,” says Festival Director Te Miringa Hohaia.

The band joins House of Shem, Cornerstone Roots, Tommy and the Fallen Horses and Departure Lounge in the latest announcement of acts for the 5-day festival. A full list of acts announced so far is included below.

For the first time ever, festival gates will open on Thursday evening, with the Visionaries Stage showcasing the best in Taranaki music and musicians to the several hundred campers expected.

“This year we wanted to include more acts and musicians in the programme as well as meet the demand from festival-goers keen to be on site ahead of the Powhiri at noon on Friday.

“Opening the camp site earlier is just one of the new ideas we have developed to make Parihaka 2010 an amazing experience,”

Early-bird tickets are available until 7 November from www.parihaka.com

The Parihaka International Peace Festival is a unique festival based at the spiritual and historic Parihaka Pa. The festival honours the teachings of the Pa’s 19th century leaders in the landscape of today. Firmly rooted in non-violent resistance, the Parihaka International Peace Festival is the culmination of projects aimed at restoring Parihaka.

Parihaka International Peace Festival welcomes Tiki Taane

Taranaki's iconic Parihaka International Peace Festival welcomes award-winning performer Tiki Taane, and a full 40-piece troupe to the 2010 Festival.

Tiki's set will feature his band, the Dub Soldiers, and Te Pou o Mangataawhiri, the kapa haka group formed in 1921 by Te Puea Herangi. "Parihaka is the one festival I've been wanting to play for years," says Taane.

"To perform and be a part of something that has so much depth and history is a huge inspiration and honour. To be joined onstage with the powerful Te Pou o Mangatawhiri, this will make it an unforgettable experience that can't be topped."

"The Parihaka Festival has wanted to include Tiki Taane since it began in 2006 and 2010 is the first year it has been possible. We are delighted to be able to present this big show at Parihaka," says Festival Director Te Miringa Hohaia.

Also joining the growing lineup at the 5th Parihaka Festival is Billy TK and Powerhouse, who are reuniting for their first performance in over 30 years.

Billy Te Kahika, regarded as one of New Zealand's greatest guitarists, has played at every Parihaka International Peace Festival. In 2010 he will be joined by musicians he last played with in the 1970s, including vocalists Mahia Blackmore and Arnold Tihama.

Other acts announced yesterday were the Benka Borodovsky Bordello Band, Big Belly Woman, Julian Temple Band, Native Sons and Roy G and the BIVinators.

The festival at Parihaka Paa runs 7-11 January 2010, with Tiki Taane and the Dub Soldiers to perform on Saturday night.

Early Bird Tickets are still available for $175 until 7 November, exclusively from http://www.parihaka.com

Parihaka Paa is situated on Surf Highway 45 in South Taranaki.

SMASHPROOF TO PLAY
PARIHAKA INTERNATIONAL PEACE FESTIVAL

As organisers count down the final weeks to the fifth Parihaka International Peace Festival, they have confirmed more acts in the latest announcement.
Smashproof will be performing on the Sunday night in what will be the South Auckland group’s biggest gig to date. The trio, who have just returned from an Australian tour, smashed a long-standing record for a New Zealand act in May of this year when their single, "Brother" celebrated eleven consecutive weeks at number one.

Group member Young Sid said yesterday, "Playing at Parihaka is a great honour. The people of Parihaka would be the most humble in this world. They are the creators of non-violent action and they've been through more than most people can imagine in the last 150 years – confiscated land, imprisonment, poverty, the list goes on.

“We are very proud to be involved in the Parihaka International Peace Festival.”

Other acts announced yesterday included Te Kupu & MC Wiya, the Brian Hatcher Band, Dread Rock, Grove Roots, Morgana Watson, the Smiles, and Tihikura Hohaia. They join an already stellar line-up that includes The Bellbirds, Fat Freddy's Drop, Herbs Unplugged, House of Shem, Moana & The Tribe, Tikii Taane & The Dub Soldiers, and SJD, plus over 30 other acts.

Other festival activities confirmed yesterday are the return of Stephen Taberner, the acclaimed Australian-based choirmaster who will again organise and rehearse the Parihaka Festival Choir, and Toru Wha, the Parihaka Ukelele band.

Tickets for the festival, held at the historic pa in South Taranaki, are selling steadily and are available at www.parihaka.com/tickets
