One of their principal objectives is to promote and strengthen the legal rights of all member companies and their recording artists, by lobbying government for the introduction and improvement of effective rights legislation. They can provide comprehensive information regarding all aspects of the recording industry. They are a helpful resource to find out about copyright issues, anti-piracy and how they affect you as the creator or producer of sound recordings or as a user of recorded music.

Other activities include:
The promotion and exercise of performance rights so that copyright owners of sound recordings and recording artists are properly paid when their recordings are broadcast or performed in the public arena.
RIANZ is also responsible for producing the annual New Zealand Music Awards, The weekly New Zealand Top 40 Albums/Singles Chart and the production and distribution of Music gift vouchers for the retail stores of New Zealand.
The New Zealand Music Awards:
The New Zealand Music Awards are considered the most coveted honour in the recording field in New Zealand. These are given out annually by RIANZ for outstanding artistic and technical achievements.
