BIG DAY OUT OFFERS UP ITS OPENING SLOT TO TALENTED NEWCOMERS
30 Oct 2008

A nationwide competition is once again underway to find an act to open the Auckland Big Day Out.

Artists can enter via bnet (excluding Wellington) and alternative radio stations in a number of main centres. The competition requires demos to be sent in for on-air judging from stations in Auckland, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Christchurch and Dunedin before the Big Day Out decides on a National Winner.

Last year, Dunedin’s The Aesthetics won the competition. Their prize included a trip to Auckland by airplane plus swanky accommodation in the big smoke.

For 2009, the Big Day Out is opening things up a little more to the prevailing zeitgeist.

Big Day Out NZ promoter Campbell Smith commented that he expected to see more of a ‘bnet’s got talent’ vibe as the competition heats up in coming weeks.

“The Aesthetics are a brilliant band but definitely a ‘trad’ selection based on their Lou Reed-drenched shouty drone rock style,” he said.

“I’m not adverse to us getting a couple of singing jugglers from Palmerston North onto the Big Day Out stage if that’s the way it turns up,” joked Smith.

“But to be honest, we’re expecting to unearth something genuinely exciting, much as we did last year. The Big Day Out has been the best music festival in the country for 15 years and we pride ourselves on showcasing the best new bands and freshest talent in the country every year alongside a superlative international line-up.”

Tune into the following bnet stations for more information on getting into the competition – or head to their websites, especially if you’re reading this in Southland, Northland or anywhere in between without a local bnet station.

it's getting close to that time of year where we all start bullsh*ting and spin out rediculouse rumors for the coming event in january. does anyone have any ideas??
well i'll start things off by mentioning some observations.....
in my prefered music genre metallica, iced earth, ac/dc and slipknot are all releasing albums in the next few months. i think it is possible for either metallica or ac/dc to headline the next one. any thoughts???

Yeah, as I've said in the past, I'm over it now. Been to several, and enjoyed them very much, but I'm done with big crowds and waiting hours between bands I like.

Gutted I missed Metallica... but I caught them on the ReLoad tour in 98, so all good. Still wish I saw them in 93 before that, and 89 before that. I was too young then.

Ok so yes Metellica was awesome and it would be great to see them again. I really want to see mudvayne, marilynmanson wouldn't be bad, korn i missed them in '99. But it will probably be someone like Britney Spears on her come back lol. Can't wait to hear the line up though. Do we have to wait till October to find out??

This always happens, every year this forum just discusses which metal act will be re-born from the grave or will put on their guitars after how many years of hiatus-ing.

I'm sure the metallica theory is thrown around every year, same with the mudvyanne, AC/DC theories and every other metal band.

I hear the Ramones are coming back from the grave especially to perform at next years BDO! Freddy Mercury is performing before them, promoting his new solo album due out at he end of this year.

And every year somebody posts about
a) how people always post about it
and
b) makes a joke about dead bands coming back

well id consider the following... big day out is at a good time of year so it gets a better audience no doubt. And Metal Day Out was on a tuesday so most people hav work and skwl and sht on.

the talk up towards the day 6th june 2006 was just supersticious ludacris wen in reality we should be having a nicely set out festival thats held annually...say per year, that would work better in my opinion

Yeah that was just sh*t management and promotion really. It takes a professional with "the knowhow", and I really doubt there's anybody in the mainstream who would tackle something like a metal festival. The closest thing we've got to that is Rock2Wgtn.
