Band & Musician News - Tono and the Finance Company debut LP release

Tono and the Finance Company debut LP release

08 March 2012 - 0 Comments

Bones and Woods is excited to announce the release of Tono and the Finance Company's Up Here For Dancing on March 26.

After two years training an immigrant's hungry, hustling eyes on Auckland, Anthonie Tonnon has written an album of distinctly modern characters and confessions.

Tonnon’s move away from Dunedin saw a transformation in the band’s line up and sound that culminated in their performances as a five piece with Beirut in January. Along the way, they found surprising allies in their new city – gaining attention through a remix by dance pop producer Pikachunes, and props from rap crew Homebrew.

Building on 2010’s critically praised Fragile Thing, Tonnon returned to Dunedin to record with Tex Houston, bringing along Auckland Finance Company members Stuart Harwood and Jonathan Pearce, and matching them against long-time Dunedin collaborators Chris Miller, Logan Valentine, Rainy McMaster and Paul Cathro.

Up Here For Dancing is a pop album with an oddball palette, an unlikely meeting of sensibilities from either end of the country. The title, Up Here For Dancing captures the stilted rhythms and spinning narratives of the album - hard to dance to, but sending signals to the same neurons.

"Tono and the Finance Company, whose front man comes on like a cross between Morrissey and a shy Jarvis Cocker-meets-Nick Cave, opened the show with a deliciously droll set of songs about love, economics, and supermarkets." - Scott Kara (NZ Herald) on Beirut at the Powerstation

“(Tonnon’s) local narratives are alternately dry and devastating.” – Dan Trevarthan  (Real Groove) on Fragile Thing

“Tonnon is an intelligent, adult lyricist (and possesses a dark, assured voice) and if the music seduces in its pop-smarts, then be prepared to be provoked into thought by what the subject matter is…One of the most surprising and rewarding local discs of the year.” – Graham Reid (http://www.elsewhere.co.nz/) on Fragile Thing
