The Pukes were formed in 2001, when Mike Puke, who does solo recordings/gigs, and formally of Nelson punk band Dead Centre, moved to Dunedin. He did some gigs with guitar/vocals/drum machine, with Kez Bizarre and Gaylene doing additional vocals. After a couple of gigs, Garth, who was doing sound, joined up on bass. Gaylene left. After a couple more gigs, Sam joined up on drums.
The Pukes have been doing semi-regular gigs ever since, mainly at the Crown. The Pukes haven't done any studio recordings yet, but have released a video CD called, 'Oh Shit! It's The Pukes Video CD', consisting of twelve live songs, recorded on video.
