Orienteer is the nom de plume of Auckland singer-songwriter Chris Lovie-Tyler. Having previously fronted a rock band, he's now venturing out on his own, making noise with just an acoustic guitar and his voice.
"I love rock music, but this feels like a better fit for me. I really like the challenge of trying to write songs that are strong even with the simplest instrumentation. I also like the more intimate feel of an acoustic gig."
Lyrically, his songs reflect his faith in Christ, but he's aiming for a broader audience than just Christians:
“I hope people will find passion, honesty and depth in what I write, and that on some level it will resonate with them—even if they don't share my beliefs."
Some of his songwriting influences include Dave Dobbyn, Don McGlashan (and The Mutton Birds), U2, Midnight Oil, Powderfinger and Switchfoot.
As far as future aspirations are concerned, he's taking a relaxed approach:
"I'm just easing my way into things, playing some open mic nights and continuing to write new songs. We'll see where it goes from there!"
