Building on the low-lit interior sounds of their critically acclaimed 2006 debut 'Rest Room', Selon Recliner have completed their second album, 'The Orchid Door', due for release in early 2009. Working with Producer Dave Holmes (Gramsci, Jakob) the band has explored a steeper landscape, exiting the 'Rest Room' & soaring across a more varied terrain.
Selon Recliner's music has been described as having a dark, hypnotic beauty that breezes along on mellow atmospheric guitars, poignant keys and gentle beats. Their Dark Pop label will be furthered by their new work, while showcasing a richer pallet of mood and atmosphere.
“If Rest Room was our interior album then this is definitely about exteriors”, says vocalist and co-songwriter Belinda Bradley.
'Lonely Girl', a swaggering space groove, is the first track to leave the mothership Nov 2008.
Selon Recliner formed in 2004 to create music that leant towards the cinematic & evocative. A band packed with song writing & visual arts talent, it was a cocktail waiting to be mixed, a lounge suite of crushed velvet sound waiting to be slept on.
Demos piled up on the sideboard, and the songs were trialed in live shows with great flourish. Steady recording took the band underground during the winter of 2005; they emerged again with the release of their debut album 'Rest Room' in April 2006. It was received enthusiastically with the album being dubbed “Moody, Dark Pop” by reviewers.
It collected a couple of international awards, a handful of nominations, charted on a swag of College Radio stations in North America, and picked up licensing deals to MTV, USA along with several other American Production Networks. The sofa had been slept on and the 'Rest Room' had exhausted its occupancy… it was time to create another space.

A Swaggering Space Groove Heard From A Galaxy Far Far Away…
“Lonely Girl” sets the pace, the first song to leave the mother ship with voluptuous bass riffs & alien beats. Recliner have been sucked into a vortex with web vixen Varla Dayne where they fight to save space kitty’s, chase off the space ghosts and stand up for the right to wear garters & provocative space wear. Is this a smirk we see on the dark pop face of Recliner?

Narrated by a band of eerie tune players the old mansion echoes argument & desire as sagging walls adorned with hunting trophies & 2nd hand treasures bare witness to toxic lovers caught in a revolving door of emotion.

Selon Recliner release new album THE ORCHID DOOR on Monday 27 April
Building on the low-lit interior sounds of their critically acclaimed 2006 debut REST ROOM, Selon Recliner have completed their second album, THE ORCHID DOOR, available in-store and digitally on Monday April 27. Working with producer Dave Holmes (Gramsci, Jacob) the band has explored a steeper landscape, exiting the REST ROOM and soaring across a more varied terrain.
After continuing confusion with the San Francisco neo punk band of the same name, recliner adjusted their identity to Selon Recliner. ‘Selon’ is French for “according to” or “the thoughts of” which seems very apt.
Selon Recliner’s music has been described as having a dark, hypnotic beauty that breezes along on mellow atmospheric guitars, poignant keys and gentle beats. Their “dark pop” label is furthered by their new work, while showcasing a richer pallet of mood and atmosphere.
“If RESTROOM was our interior album then this is definitely about exteriors”, says vocalist and co-songwriter Belinda Bradley.
REST ROOM was received enthusiastically and collected a couple of international awards, a handful of nominations, charted on a swag of College radio stations in North America, and picked up licensing deals to MTV, USA along with several other American production networks.
Selon Recliner are celebrating the launch of THE ORCHID DOOR with a fitting event to work in with the album title. The band will be holding a lush buffet and show album release at the infamous New Orient restaurant in Auckland on Saturday 16 May, which has the surrounds to complement the vibe of the album. With a complimentary 'Orchid Door' cocktail on arrival, and the New Orient's famous buffet to arouse appetites, DJ Jimmy Olsen and VJ Graffix will add extra seasoning and get the night spinning. This night promises to be a something you won’t want to miss. Tickets are available from undertheradar.co.nz.
“The second album from Selon Recliner is an atmospheric and sparse experience – Portishead meets Strawpeople is the sound, with a dark, brooding mood…The production is slick and for the genre they sit in this is an international quality recording with class.” 4 stars – Stu Edwards, Waikato Times
