In 1998, Subtract released through their own record label UltraSound Recordings with distribution through BMG, their debut EP 'Quench' which sold over 1500 copies, a very significant amount – in fact outselling many NZ bands that receive major airplay on both television and radio.
The crowd that arrived at their Real Groovy in-store release, were the largest the store has ever had. 'Quench' was the top seller at Real Groovy for several weeks, outselling even Massive Attack who were on tour in New Zealand. They were voted onto the Radio bFM top 10 and remained in the bFM Charts for 10 weeks as well as the EP entering the NZ Singles Charts.
The band also made a video clip for the song 'Same Mistake' directed by Tony Johns. All this contributing to the band achieving a national profile.
Subtract have supported several international acts including – Helmet, Slayer, Ozzy Osbourne, Fear Factory, Opeth and now Lamb of God. They have played at both the Big Day Out and the Vans Warped Tour. Tracks from 'Quench' feature on the York Street Studios complilation CD 'Keen As' and the Lava magazine compilation CD.
Subtract have developed a fan base in Japan, and in 1999 started selling CDs in a major Japanese record outlet. They have been featured in Japanese underground magazine Eat and are planning to tour Australia and Japan soon.
Also in 1999, highly respected Subtract drummer Mark Rees was endorsed by Zildjian.
In 2000, Ultrasound Recordings Ltd in conjunction with Global Routes Distribution released the band's second EP 'Bloodshot'.
Like their debut release 'Quench', 'Bloodshot' was recorded and mixed in 4 days by Jason Young, again financed by the band, from artwork to final mix, including the new video clip for the track 'Defeat', directed once again with award winning director Tony Johns of Linton Films.
Subtract played live on the TV show Space in August of 2000, the heaviest band ever to play live on national television. They have also since been seen on the Squeeze metal special in 2002, The National Anthem 24 hour music special in 2004, and have released videos 'The Package', 'Mark of the Lion' and 'Turkey Shoot' from their debut full length album 'Formula One' released in August 2004. Since 'Formula One's release Subtract have toured extensively around NZ 5 times, with the likes of 8 Foot Sativa, Frankenbok, and Shakhan in tow. They have now joined forces with Evan Short of Concord Dawn fame, and have reached new heights of insanity. Check them out llive soon. You'll not be disappointed!!
