Pillow fights anyone?
a review on Amy Racecar submitted by nads.

While not well-known, Amy Racecar are one of the best bands that have come out of the NZ music scene in the past few years. Endeavours is their third cd and definitely their best. The sound is eclectic, mixing hard drum beats with soulful almost ska tunes.

The opening track ‘Richard killed himself’ is a mix between Coldplay and Metallica on the best acid trip of their lives. The kick drums also get the greatest pounding of their lives, while the verses all have intros that are heavily bass pumped. The chorus is the perfect music for that slumber party with 50 year old men having pillow fights. Get what I’m saying? Nah... Don’t worry, neither do I.

The standout track of the EP is definitely ‘12 Seasons’ which is a mournful number that just pulls at my heartstrings. The weeping keyboard and beat show what is happening as it figuratively unfolds before your eyes. As one of my friends said, it is the perfect tune for a hippy’s funeral. Sad but upbeat, happy but mournful, rejoicing but makes you want to go through twenty boxes of tissues.

The other two tracks of the EP are Hazing and Blindfold Satanists, (the second being a name that I give big kudos for) and while are still great songs, are not amazingly standoutish as the others.
There is no possible way to label Amy Racecar without leaving something else out. They are unique and that is a big deal in a music industry where everyone is striving to be the next big thing. In a few years, I can imagine Amy Racecar as one of the many diverse faces of New Zealand music.
And to conclude: two thumbs up, great holiday fun!
