How long can a joke last, before it's no longer a joke anymore? Well, Orewa's often eyebrow-raising and more-often-than-not entertaining punk outfit, The Poorly Rounded, have been at it for over 5 years - a fact which does little more than scare the band and give them and urge to write a song about it.
Formed in early 1998 from the rapidly faltering Trendy Serpent, The 'Ost and Ruban See-J Juan initially started out doing a one-late-night angry attack, on the popular belief that the world would be a better place if everyone was a bunch of well-rounded individuals living a well-rounded life.
Inspired by such bands as Anal Cunt, The Meatmen, DRI, Minutemen and Dead Kennedys, the best way to do this seemed to be in the manner of sub-30 second songs using whatever instruments were at hand. As time passed, it seemed that this was a lot of fun to do each year, and friends also enjoyed it, even if they did take a roasting in a number of songs along with bad advertising slogans, shite cars, pop music, strangers with bad etiquette and, errr, mohawked infants.
With a list of originals numbering more than 350 (a vast percentage of which barely make it to 20 seconds), The Poorly Rounded re-recruited former drummer Kodyone and have been foraying into some of the popular free Auckland punk shows. Adding to their performance is the ideal to embrace the Naked Raygun philosophy of handing out "free shit" to lucky/foolhardy/confused gig patrons. Yeah, they do pick on a lot of things, but they always start with themselves. "Remember", says 'Ost, "Everyone has faults, especially The Poorly Rounded".
